Agreed, the right is better, a result of it taking longer. But if I was animating I don't think I'd have the stamina to do it to every frame.
Pick whatever method suits the purpose!

I think Eq was saying the right one was slightly easier actually, as the burn tool takes less pressicion to produce a nice result. Personally My love for plain pixel art shall always dictate my preference, but the burn effect certainly makes it look more 3D. Very awesome.
