burn vs cell shading
« on: January 01, 2011, 10:44:58 AM »
burn shading makes larger file size, but is a little easier than the cell shading. i just wanted to get an opinion of what other people think looks better, cause i cant decide what i should go with

It depends. The burn shading looks really good on the character's hair, skin, and shirt, and really out of place on his armor. Metal reflects light more directly, so cel-shading look better there. Try to combine the styles.

I agree with WarHampster.  The burned armor looks pretty dumb because armor isn't rounded enough to produce that kind of shadow.  I think the burn would look better overall if it were more subtle and not such a huge range of shades.

You're pretty awesome with the old burn tool Eq, but nothing beats good old hand drawn shading/highlighting.

Like I said many years ago, you should really consider professionally making art like this, you have a real talent. Unless of course you already are.  :P

That might work out well, this is the same quality as many games I've seen recently. As for the mix and match idea, I think the smooth is the best way, but it takes longer to make it look good.
On some parts the burn/dodge tools were set too high. On the armor you can use cell shading but blur it. That way it's more precise.

EDIT: Check it out I combined the two into one awesome pic!

I noticed, but it works now, I think maybe Google does something where it doesn't show up for about a day. I have no idea why.

ok heres an update, i really like that blur effect on the shading, im gonna have to try that. but combineing the blur effect with the cell shading is more work and for animations it amounts to alot more work. same with combineing cell with burn, i just want peoples oppinion of which style looks better. the burn is so much easier and faster to do than cell so i might just go with that. i tryed to lay off to much burning on the metal parts this time

Dodge/burn is made of win, that one is best.
