I'm getting along with Java and hope to make many a game with it in the future. I still hope to make many a game with 4.0 as well though. :)

Well, I'm not going to pursue game design in the future but I'll be studying C and Java at college next year, and I'll teach myself Objective-C so I can develop iPhone applications.

Done: SC, BASIC, basics of C, most of Java

To do: ASM, maybe C++

For my Java final project I'm porting Equanox's RPG engine

I hope to own a software company. I'll need to start using a language that I can actually use, perhaps Objective C instead of RB...

(Psst! Java... A programming language that runs on most machines, very small file sizes, and very fast)

Web based apps are the next big thing, so are mobile applications. Most of them are Java applets anyway, but there's also Python, Flash and C/C++.

My personal view is that more people will use mobile apps if they are designed for Nokias or Sony Ericsson phones. Sure, the iPhone is a beast, but it's not very popular. I see more people with Sony and Nokia branded mobiles than Apple branded ones.

Desktop software isn't selling anymore. I blame Apple for producing all the software you could want from a computer and bundling it with the system...

The file sizes aren't small when you consider users who don't have Java installed (Windows does not have it installed out of the box).

A user downloads your nifty 1 MB program and then discovers it needs a 50 MB Java download to operate.

I would also dispute fast, unless you have a JIT compiler on your platform. Otherwise, the bytecode is interpreted. Faster than SilverCreator, sure, but you could still do better in C/C++.

Java runs on basically all machines, but that is also a bad thing, because you don't get consistent user interfaces on each platform. If you write your Java app on Windows, it's going to look pretty lame on the Mac.

Sun tried to fix this by adding a command that dynamically choses your app skin based on the OS, but most people don't use it still-- hence the crappy/inconsistent UI.

Where I live having an iPhone basically determines how cool you are.
