Learning to sprite
« on: October 25, 2009, 08:19:21 PM »
I have decided that I need to learn how to make sprites, because Silver and War seem to be the best at it here, I was wondering what resources you used to get good at it. Every tutorial I could find online seemed to steal sprites from games like pokemon :-/

That was really useful, now all I need to do is figure out how to move that over to vector-based sprites, which is what I am planning on using for this game (Its supposed to be "cartoony")

I can't help you there... traditional spriting techniques won't work on cell shaded vector graphics. Look at some flash animation tutorials I guess.

I'm thinking if you want to learn to shade in vector graphics, you'd have to get really good at making gradients.

NONONONONONNOO

Gradients are the devil in art of any kind. Make learning real shading a top priority.

Yeah, he's got a great tutorial on Street Fighter style sprites. :)

I tell you the truth, pencil and paper are the best tools for drawing. Take a look at Mark Kistler's site: http://www.mkisdraw3d.com/public/p_ovaa/

Whilst he teaches cartoons, pixel art uses the exact same principals for shading, shadow, density, counter, size and whatnot. You'll see improvement after your very first lesson, and if you practice an hour a day you'll be drawing stuff like this within a few weeks:

Yea, I may end up using gradients because that is the style of game I am trying to make, not because it looks good.

And I SUCK at drawing, and art in general :P so that is also a reason that I am cheating and using gradients :P

You're going to want at least three frames so the motion is smooth. Other than that, not bad!

Lol, because I suck at animating I based it off of the original zelda sprites which had 2 frames, but I will try 3

Thanks

Alrighty, that third frame was too easy.
Please tell me what you think, up and down animations will come once I perfect these ones (to a certain extent)
