Oh dear! :o Can you still interact with the stuff on your desktop? If so you might be wise to move everything currently on your desktop onto the Macintosh HD, just to prevent accidental deletion whilst pondering a solution.

Hey Eq, these guys seem to have solved the problem by logging out and logging back in again:

One of the last posts also recommends typing a path changing command into terminal.

that worked thanks. it made the desktop that was in the trash into a regular folder, then all i had to do was drag out the contents to the real desktop. stupid imac, you cant delete yourself

ooooh, you can do that? i never thought about how that works. What if you drag the desktop folder onto the desktop? Do you get infinite desktops, or make some sort of logical paradox and blow up your computer?

That happened to me once, and yes the computer blows up. Huge pieces shards of my moniter flew out and took me to munchkin land. I met a wizard, a witch, and a wierdo without a brain. Needless to say, we went on a huge adventure, and eventually a lady who flew around in a pink bubble told me and my dog to click our heels together 3 times and repeat "There's no place like home." When that didn't work I punched her in the face, and woke up in the hospital.
so don't try it.

P.S. unless you want to meet the munchkins.

What would happen if you put the trash can in the trash can?
