town names

If you can't think up a good name for a town in an RPG,
Try this:
1: Think of one word that describes your town.
2: Go to google translate.
3: Type in the word from step one.
4: Pick a language.
5: Hit the translate button.
I came up with some pretty cool names.

Way better than just stringing together nonsense syllables.  "Fuh...dorf...cag...town!"

It means isolated in Swedish.

Take a word, mountain for example.
Remove the consonants: ouai
Insert new consonants: Conutai.

Its a method that often works quite well for me.

Rinkworks.com has my favoritest random name generator. Mostly because of the long list of settings. If the specific one you need isn't there there's something close. (Really long names make good names for wizards or genies for example)

For me, naming the places in my game world is like naming children. Each name is considered with great care and personally fitted to the characteristics of the thing I'm naming. Random name generators can sometimes inspire me, but I'd never just churn out a bunch of random results and make a map with them. Why, it wouldn't feel like my world at all...
