GM Video Tutorials
« on: November 06, 2009, 09:39:32 AM »
I was working on a set of GM video tutorials awhile back so's to have some new content on the revamped Roguesoft website, but because I'm so busy with work these days I doubt I'll get the website up anytime soon, thus I thought I'd post the tutorials here in the meantime.

I finished the first six which cover the basics of GM and I'll eventually work my way up to grid navs, battle engines and all the more complicated stuff.

Anyways, here they are:

Introducing the Interface

Basic Commands

Variables Explained - Part 1

Variables Explained - Part 2

Magic Eight Ball Game

Using the Inventory

Storm the Castle Game

This looks like it would be really useful. Especially for people new to making games.
EDIT: Magic Eight Ball tutorial is the best one. (Smart Computer)

I must be dreaming (wake up me wake up) How could this have happened. Tireas' cry when he found his computer fallen over in his chair with it's screen shattered.

HMM Maybe
IF variableA = variableB THEN
  do this
ELSE
  do this
END IF

REFRESH TEXT
REFRESH PICT

Maybe string manipulation later

Awesome. I will link to these. Thanks!
Maybe I can get you to redo some of these in a few months for GameMaker 4.0.

Sounds good to me. I covered basic string manipulation in the second variable tutorial, but I could do WORD$, STR$ and VAL I suppose. :)

I still haven't been able to compile as universal because of some differences in file handling that I haven't solved yet. I'm also having trouble with text fields for the script editor. I see Mike is having text handling problems with SC too, so it makes me feel a little better that it's not just me.

What does universal include? 10.3 and above?

Unfortunately, I can only compile Universal for OS X 10.4 and up. I may try to compile an 10.3 version, but rght now it looks like it will probably require at least v10.4.

There is a way to compile it so that the PPC side uses 10.3 libraries, and the Intel side uses 10.4 libraries. However, 10.3 is very old and almost anyone (actually, everyone if you use XPostFacto) who is still using 10.3 can upgrade to 10.4.

The only reason to support 10.4 even, is because 10.5 cuts out G3 support. Some people may still be using iBook G3s and such. Anyone with a G4 can install Leopard (if their machine is slower than 867 MHz, a simple Open Firmware hack will take care of the Leopard Installer's requirement)

I recorded another video awhile ago and forgot to upload it: http://screencast.com/t/MTM4OGY3

It's how to make a Storm The Castle game.
