The Day The Forum Died

I believe I arrived right after the spammage of 2007... Kinda sad I missed it.

Oh indeed? I think it might have been just me, Swamp, Mist, Eq and Al back then. It was the days of Lost Winds, V5 and of course: the original GM forums. One day I'll have to compress those times into the form of a song. Or better yet, a parody of an already existing song. I'm thinking one of Bob Marley's.

It ended up one of Don Mclean's: http://www.mediafire.com/?oaemhenekmy

Apologies Don.

EDIT:

Ooops, the link was to a folder, not the file. Fixed.

Here are the lyrics incase anyone's interested:

Quote
The Day The Music Forum Died

A long, long time ago...
I can still remember,
The Mac GameMaker forum was alive.
It was the first site in my Bookmarks bar,
And people came from near and far,
To play the games that other's had contrived.

I learned more their than anywhere,
For hours at the screen I'd stare.
Code I couldn't remember?
I'd simply ask a Member!
But one dark day I got the news;
The forum's host had blown a fuse,
And I was left to sing the blues,
The day, the forum... died.

So bye-bye, Mac GameMaker website,
Your updatin' I'm a waitin' for each morning and night,
So hurry up and fill my heart with delight,
'Cause I long to see the forum put right...
'Cause I long to see the forum put right...

Do you still use the V5 Nav?
And is GM Lite the only version you have?
Time to update your specs I think.
Now days we all use V6,
'Cause V5's code weighs a sack of bricks,
And that's enough to drive a man to drink!

Well I know that GM 4.0,
Is coming soon but the wait is slow.
For now version 3.9,
Is suiting me just fine.
I was a novice teenage programmer,
A game designing amateur,
But I knew that I could endure,
The day, the forum... died.

I started singing:
Bye-bye, Mac GameMaker website,
Your updatin' I'm a waitin' for each morning and night,
So hurry up and fill my heart with delight,
'Cause I long to see the forum put right...
'Cause I long to see the forum put right...

Now for two years GM's community,
Has made it's home on the GMG,
But our old times haven't been forgot.
Like when Mist wrote G-MOD in PHP,
When we tried to make an MMORPG,
And when Swamp was warned for spamming quite allot!

Oh and, while the spammage war raged on,
Ghost and Eq weren't getting on;
They argued every day,
And neither would give way.
The list of members grew by three,
When Gandolf, Gnome and old TD,
Dropped in oh so suddenly,
The day, the forum... died.

They were singing:
Bye-bye, Mac GameMaker website,
Your updatin' I'm a waitin' for each morning and night,
So hurry up and fill my heart with delight,
'Cause I long to see the forum put right...
'Cause I long to see the forum put right...

"See you later, Silver Creator!",
Laughed the great forum debater,
And straight into the fray he lunged.
He gave a great almighty nudge,
But the SC crowd refused to budge,
Into darkness the GMG was plunged.

There were posts about Obama's flaws,
Discussion of religious laws.
No games were being made,
No old ones being replayed.
The amount of vulgar words grew denser,
The great debater pleaded "censer!"
Each post was but a spam dispenser,
The day, the forum... died.

We started singing:
Bye-bye, Mac GameMaker website,
Your updatin' I'm a waitin' for each morning and night,
So hurry up and fill my heart with delight,
'Cause I long to see the forum put right...
'Cause I long to see the forum put right...

Oh and, there we were all in one place,
Looking for file hosting space,
With no hidden signup fees.
So come on: Mike will give us Half a gig,
Ghost three quarters, (man that's big!)
Sign me up and host my files Ghost please.

Oh and, as I started to upload,
My internet connection slowed.
It was a software bug,
I was forced to pull the plug.
And as the glitch took hold of my Machine,
The hard drive started to wipe clean,
And Neo leapt right from the screen,
The day, the forum... died.

He was singing:
Bye-bye, Mac GameMaker website,
Your updatin' I'm a waitin' for each morning and night,
So hurry up and fill my heart with delight,
'Cause I long to see the forum put right...
'Cause I long to see the forum put right...

I met an Elf I didn't know,
And I asked about his magic bow,
But he just smiled and turned away.
I went up to the weapon store,
Where I'd read the riddle once before,
But having found no gold I couldn't pay.

And in the dream the seagull searched,
The owl upon the cliff top perched.
The rabbit went unspoken,
The dream remained unbroken.
And the three things needed for the spell;
The sword, the shield and the ring as well,
Were wielded as she waved farewell,
The day, the forum... died.

And she was singing:
Bye-bye, Mac GameMaker website,
Your updatin' I'm a waitin' for each morning and night,
So hurry up and fill my heart with delight,
'Cause I long to see the forum put right...
'Cause I long to see the forum put right...

We were singing:
Bye-bye, Mac GameMaker website,
Your updatin' I'm a waitin' for each morning and night,
So hurry up and fill my heart with delight,
'Cause I long to see the forum put right...
'Cause I long to see the forum put right...

I didn't stick to them, nor sing very well the ones I did stick to, but I was constantly out of breath as the ghaddy thing's over seven minutes long! ;D

Is that you singing? I gotta say, that's a nice song. I might put it on my iPod (even though I didn't get a single mention >:( just kidding  ;D)

You have a nice singing style. At one point I swear I heard "fly high, lesbian seagull..."

Why thank you kind sir! :) I'm not much of a singer to begin with but with the added problem of having no microphone bar the low quality mac integrated one, the result sounds horribly drab to me. But I did it in the name of comedy, not good singing, hehe...

You should hear it played backwards; it's the entire Martin Luther King speech.

Wow... that song was... amazing. Those lyrics are genius, it's a marvel how you could ever have fit just about the whole history from the death of Gm's forum to now(I couldn't have remembered so much). Everything flowed beautifully...
This song's definitely a keeper.
Though... is your voice really that light? Makes a really good effect in the song.

I must say, I'm extremely impressed... not only are you a good singer, but you also wrote some awesome lyrics. There is something special about the GMG... not many outdated card-based development systems garner such an enthusiastic community.

Hehe, thanks fellas, glad you liked it.

Nah, I don't talk like that normally. I actually have somewhat of a monotonous voice normally, but me and my younger sister have been puppeteering and voice acting for years, so I've learned how to stretch it to get some funny accents and whatnot. That's actually one of the reasons I don't like this recording; my normal voice sounds flat and faltering, but singing a song with a mad accent adds allot of expression and is much more entertaining. Since American Pie isn't sung with a mad accent however, I didn't think the GMG spinoff should be.

There certainly is something special about the GMG. I'd still love to see that documentary idea come to life. (I can't remember who suggested it)

*cough*

I think the GMG is special because we love the idea of the real Macintosh philosophy; simple and stylish. Put that with freedom and you have something worth keeping. Fuck knows why we still support programs from the OS 9 era and older, but hell, we're having fun doing it :P

Woh! Greetings and salutations fellow family member from beyond the screen! Indeed I'm surprised. What brings you here on such a fine 'void of all weather conditions whatsoever' (as forums should be, or something's seriously wrong) evening? Surfing the web for writing inspiration?

If we could only get Sora to join as well...

Who knows brother, who knows? Sora may one day join. Anyway, one day I may write a book about such a forum as this. And right now I've got a touch of writers block, so maybe this site will help... it makes me laugh

Eh, *coughs*, three. I know I said it was three last time, but actually it was four, I miss counted, (I was never very bright when it came to maths...) But of course then I added in the extra chapter and all that. Have you started reading what I sent you?
