Actually, the more I watch the preview the more I love it. As an entertainment device it really is astounding. To hold a movie in your hands and bring it with you wherever you go, even while you go! It's truly incredible. I can see iBookStore changing the market too. Book prices will drop dramatically, just like games have with the App Store. I reckon they'll sell millions- nay, billions- nay, thousands!

Apple seem to be more interested in looking good than looking where they're going.
It hardly matters anymore. It's reached the stage where consumers look to Apple to find out where they themselves are going. ;D

I think this device is a bit more towards entertainment. Think about it, you know the DS, Psp, and all those other hand held gaming consoles? This one is just like those but faster, more space, games that can be downloaded immediately at a cheap price or free, internet anywhere, and heck; you can actually type up the AP Lang essay as if you were on a computer. The screen is large, perfect for movies and games while keeping incredibly thin, portable, amazing to hold, and lighter than a netbook.
Just because it isn't a replica of Mac OS X doesn't mean it's not truly amazing. It can do many things a computer can't do or even an iPhone! So it can't run the gazillions of mac apps out there, there are 140,000 apps that'll run on it! Besides that there are apps specifically being made for the iPad.
Overall, an average person will probably be able to do everything they need on it. I personally would love to have a version of Xcode for it so I could code on it, though that's unnecessary. Seriously, what else would you need(really need, so much that it'd be a shiny paperweight without) that it doesn't have?

Anyways, how much do you guys want to bet that multi-tasking and all those amazing other features will be in OS 4.0?

Multitasking's a heavy task on flash memory. Have Apple promised it, or are you hoping?

I think it will do alright as long as Apple doesn't market it as a laptop replacement (which they are kind of doing :-/). If they aggressively market it as a multimedia and gaming device, and enter good deals with publications like newspapers and magazines (This, I think, has a lot of potential. They should model it off of the Kindle but through the app store, instant gold!), then this thing could work out well. On the other hand, if they try to paint it as a full featured tablet PC, then it will fail - there are less expansive and more powerful tablets that have been around for years.

As for me, I'm excited to see what the iPad can do once it's hacked :D

This is truly scary. In the not-so-distant future, there will be one cell phone - the iPhone.

I'd rather spend the extra cash and buy a laptop. That way you have all the things the iPad can do as well as a myriad of other things on a platform that has been around for about 20 years.

That's the problem, and is why Apple needs to put unique stuff on the iPad that it can do better than a laptop.

The touch screen novelty will blow everything else out of the water. There's really nothing to compare it to in terms of the fun factor the interface boasts. People will want one just to browse movies and books, let alone watch/read them. I think it's clear that this is not a work device, it's a bloomin' awesome personal entertainment system.

What really does it for me though: I'd imagine it's hellishly less comfortable to hold a laptop over your face while lying in bed than it is to hold an iPad.

Never actually thought about it that way. And with the iWork suite, it's seriously like a sleek and thin touchscreen laptop. A pricey laptop, mind you, but there's pros and cons for everything.
Definitely a purchase when the price goes down, as I'll be looking for the 32 gig, and 699 is a bit out of my willing-impulse range.
