Roguesoft Tile Set (developer tool)
« on: August 15, 2009, 03:04:51 PM »
To encourage indie game development I've decided to release the Roguesoft Tile Set under a public use license. I know the toil involved in game design and RPG's in particular require a huge amount of determination and willpower to finish, so let old Silver make the task less daunting by providing you with graphics. I only ask that you put something like "Tile Set by Roguesoft" followed by a link to the Roguesoft website (www.roguesoft.co.uk) on the credits screen of your game.

Here's the tile set:

And here's a few entities:

And here's a couple o' Roguesoft logos incase anyone should ever want to slip one into the credits screen. (your game would look so professional! ;D)

Anywhoo, enjoy!

For those who plan on using this, I suggest this tile mapping tool:
RepTile
Just import your tiles and map away...

When I started out my tiles weren't the same size. ;D I was just hand drawing them in AppleWorks and matching the size by eye. But hey, if you wanna climb a mountain you gotta start at the bottom. :)

EDIT:

I've added an entity sprite sheet to the first post. I've deliberately left it basic though, as I encourage developers to create their own entities or at least edit my templates to get practice in creating.

This is excellent... and I didn't know about those programs either. I'll have to check them out.

Are these tiles all completely original? I trust you, but kind of have to ask... legal reasons. Furthermore, how do you feel about me editing the sprites and then using them?

Yup, all of my tiles are my own original handy work. :) That's not to say I'm not influenced by other artists mind you; I often look at dozens of images for inspiration. My favorite works are those by David Gervais and Kevin Kinell, but I studied the mountain tiles in a game called Queville specifically to get the perspective right for my own new mountain tiles.

Well, I'm not too keen on direct edits of my new stuff (as in, any of the tiles without black border lines), but I'd be more than happy if you used them as templates to create your own tiles. Indeed, I'd be downright proud. :) As for any of my old stuff (the tile sheet in this thread for example), you're free to do whatever you like with them. Go nuts, and show me what you come up with. :)

Silver,
I packaged these up and made it available here:

I hope that's OK. Take a look at it. If you want me to remove it or change it, just let me know.

I'm going to upload the v6 grid nav too. They sort of go together. Good stuff.
