Connors and I have been sketching out a new GMG to fit with the GMG death and revival happening May 2015.

The idea is to cut out all the useless, static stuff and have a fast, simple, and dynamic place for the community.

The Front Page

A Specific Thread

We want to take the stuff from the best places, like Twitch's chat, Reddit's comments, and Facebook's realtime dynamic updating.
The website will have different sections that have their own styles and displays. The Homebrew Games section could have a sliding gallery of games at the top.

The best part is that most of it will be dynamic content controlled by users.

Bahaha, the example content is freaking hilarious.

I really like it. Having the chat side-by-side with the forum threads (instead of at the top) makes them both accessible at the same time, which is a really smart idea.

IMO, the forum section should show the tree structure so that users always know "where" they are, e.g. GMG Forums -> Announcements -> Updated GMG.

I'm not sure about the list at the top (All, Coding, Graphics, etc.). Would those be links to subforums, or would they be links to download areas? If they link away from the forum+chat page, they should be moved outside of the rectangular area where forums and chat are, so that users aren't surprised when the links bring them to a page which lacks forums and chat.

That's where the forum is massively changing. The site and the forum will be one. It will be somewhat weird cause of the different thread style.

The list at the top are different sections of the forum. The All section shows threads of every section. Clicking the Coding section will only show threads from the coding section.
Each section will have it's own style. Threads from each section will be styled slightly differently, for example in the Homebrew Game section, if you make a thread you'll have an option to add a video or an image banner of the game. As well as other options specific to the section.

Basically, we had discussed setting it up with one dynamic page, with the option to show only pages in a certain section. This will likely be based on a simple tag system. The chat follows as you scroll down and scrolling loads more posts.

Things like the game gallery would be based on the same programming but have their own styles, so we could still have an actual gallery, but when you sort through the games it shows the relevant discussion thread.

I'm gonna go bug Gan now with suggestions to make it not be too messy.

Personally I want to make sure it still basically feels like a forum and not like one gigantic comments page. Which is what Reddit feels like at times.

This seems like a great opportunity to bring up the fact that the board titles should be changed when this major update happens. Given that there's still a section for GameMaker projects and 90% of the posts are in Trash Talk... I mean, we could have a section for music projects and other projects, maybe a tech news section, a comedy section...

I agree they could be more general since the community is a bit less focused on GM/SC now. We've begun thinking about the sections we would want. (Not a final list by any means):

Things like Completed Games, Coding, Art, Music, Tech News, Gaming and Trash Talk (might rename it "Other" or "General").

Subforums within these sections would be replaced by some kind of tag search system. So you can go in "Coding" and search using the tag "Game Maker" to find those threads.
