Could you imagine building a kinect into a hand held HD video recorder with a gyroscope and accelerometer?

The gyroscope and accelerometer would track your position. The HD video will record all the colors, the kinect would capture the depth. All of this data would be compiled into a single 3D scene.

With that contraption you could go into the middle of a room, hit record, rotate 360 degrees and have a full 3D scene of the room. In which could be used in a video game or something. It'd be so realistic.

That is reallllly cool! I've seen software that tries to turn 2d images into 3d models, but this steps that up a level.

People are doing awesome stuff with the Kinect.

Thing about getting a 3D model of a room is the accelerometer might not be accurate enough to know if you moved. Still, it's an AWESOME idea, you'd only need a tripod and then you could slowly turn it around that way.

The gyroscope detects rotation, the accelerometer detects linear motion. Combined the position tracking could be fairly accurate.

Could you imagine having realistic landscape and rooms in 3D games? That'd bring a whole new level of awesome. Of course people would probably start mixing fantasy and reality. Especially when it comes down to shooting games that have graphics as good as what we can see in the actual world.

wow thats amazing, technology has advanced so much, and the kinect isnt that expensive, its only 100$ if you get it with the xbox, i heard it only costs like 55$ to manufacture so the price will probly go down after the holidays. its funny microsoft doesnt even know the potential of their own product.

There's plenty of ways it could be glitchy. The wii can't really tell where the remote is in 3D space very well, even with the added sensors. It just knows which way you're tilting/pointing it. Still, it's a cool idea. However the main problem is that it can only record surfaces facing it. You saw the videos...

I believe the move knows where you are in 3d space 8)

That's where the gyroscope and accelerometer come in.

Have you see some of those augmented reality iPhone apps? They track your position with incredible precision.
With a kinect, HD camcorder, gyroscope, and accelerometer mix you'd be able to move about the room and record data into a 3D scene. You'd be able to move around objects to record them from all angles.

The Wii mote doesn't track 3D position. Using it's accelerometer it tracks change in velocity and with it's infared LEDs can detect where the mote is pointing to on a 2D surface.

The move tracks the glowing balls. Using the size of the ball it can detect how far back the player is.

Cool, very cool. But weren't you talking about the Kinect? Or I suppose you could combine them. OK I believe you Gan! XD  that would be SO cool... Now what could you do with a 3D model of your house I wonder?
You know this could be just as useful for film and animation, you could more easily edit things in if you simultaneously recorded in 2D and 3D. You could use the 3D map to tell the computer where things are that something goes behind and not need a blue-screen.[/stream-of-consciousness]

And do a search for "Kinect Robot"

They already use tech like that for capturing animations for movies and games. The awesomeness of Kinect is that now we have similar tech for super cheap.
