Being an iPhone developer and avid user I agree with Job's decision.

Being a hungry shop clerk by day and an absolutely starving graphic designer by night having returned home to find no dinner in the fridge when I could have sworn I had a curry left over from yesterday, I think it's time to go shopping before Tesco closes.

Also, I agree with his decision.

I agree that Flash is not designed for phone platforms. However I do not agree with the lockout that Jobs is doing. I believe that he should allow flash onto the iPhone for the people who want to use it.
Flexibility is paramount.

I'm starting to think that there's some sort of brainwashing program built into iPhones.

Jobs is obscuring the truth when he says how "closed" Flash is. Adobe offers a free ActionScript compiler that stands alone from the Adobe Flash product and is quite configurable. http://livedocs.adobe.com/flex/3/html/help.html?content=compilers_13.html

Yes, flash is as closed as apple's iPhone platform.
The only reason why I wouldn't have flash on my iPhone is because of the energy usage, even then I want it, I just don't want to have to use it.

Isn't the Flash format documented on Adobe's website ?

I don't really like how Flash is necessary for nearly all online video.  The upcoming HTML5 will do a lot in helping minimize Flash's near-monopoly.  Flash is good for games though.

Flash games are fun to play and easy to make. Sadly they are an incredible CPU and ram hog. I experience many issues on my mac with it, imagine it on my iPhone...

Nearly all Flash videos can be played in VLC or QuickTime (as long as they are not DRM, and they don't use a streaming protocol, just HTTP). Use the Activity window in Safari to get the URL of the .flv or .mp4 file. You can play .mp4 directly in QuickTime, and .flv works in VLC. Older Macs should use VLC for all videos including .mp4 - it's faster than QuickTime.

The only reason Flash became so popular for video is because it was the plugin with the largest installed base (larger than QT, WMP, or RealPlayer), and it offered cross-platform DRM (WMP only offers Windows DRM).

One side effect of this is that RealPlayer has faded into near-obscurity - once the champion of online audio and video.

You DO realize what HTML 5 is, right?
HTML 5 is basicly a bunch of instructions telling other companies to do stuff.
What that means is the <video> tag will simply link to video and then the browser will decide how it is going to play it.
Sure, in some cases a native video player can have speed improvements, but in many cases I would expect there to still be at least some inefficient 3rd party code involved.

Nah, HTML5 and CSS3 are completely new levels of awesomeness. Check out the current docs: http://css3please.com/

We already have a rift when it comes to the VIDEO tag.

Gecko browsers support Ogg codecs, while WebKit browsers support H.264. Each group does not support the others' codecs.

It looks like H.264 is going to win primarily on the strength of Apple and Google (Safari and Chrome). It's also rumored that Microsoft/IE will be joining the H.264 camp, but I'm sure they'll dick it up by supporting WMV as well, and some dumbass site owners will use it, ensuring that there are STILL IE-only, Windows-only websites out there. (unless the other browsers tap into Flip4Mac on the Mac and WMP ActiveX on Windows - and then that still doesn't support all the cool flip effects and stuff).

Also, check these links out, use a WebKit browser.

http://craftymind.com/factory/html5video/CanvasVideo.html - runs great even on my "outdated" G5.

http://www.craftymind.com/factory/html5video/CanvasVideo3D.html - runs a bit slower, but still awesome.
