The most common online game development environments are flash, flex, silverlight, and unity.

Yeah, I believe all of them to an extent. Like in flash, you can use the student's edition.

Flash: Not Free - With student discount it is ~$200
Flex: Only free if you are a student.
Silverlight: Free, however the IDE is Windows only so you will have to supply your own text editor etc. in the mac world
Unity: 3D, costs $200 for a Indie licence
I may be able to reprogram simple games into flash for you.

You need to be a student or it is ~$300

I believe they open-sourced Flex recently, but someone would have to double check.

There is another compiler for flash called MTASC or Motion-Twin Action Script Compiler


That is OS and free so you could look into that.
