Movod Ruins - A GameMaker game
« on: August 14, 2009, 12:58:32 AM »
A new adventure game made with GameMaker was released. It's called Movod Ruins. The game was created by Tradley Sasser. It's a large download (71 Mb), but it has a lot of sounds and short movie animations in it. There's also a walk-through available for it if you get stuck.

Both the game and the walk-through can be downloaded here:

Gad Zooks! A new GM game is reason alone to celebrate, but a 71 MB game! Wow, I'll definitely check this out tonight.

Wow, I just finished it. Movod Ruins is a brilliant game! Twice I had to look at the walkthrough to solve a puzzle, but overall gameplay is fluid and enjoyable with a plot that keeps you guessing. I especially like the way you need to revisit old areas. :)

The effort put into the animation sequences is amazing too; nearly everything you interact with has a corresponding movie file. The only minor complaint I have about the game is that GM has a problem locating some of the movie files, resulting in having to locate them manually. I don't know what's causing the problem (or whether it's in fact a problem with my computer and not the game itself) but it's a bit of a pain having to interrupt gameplay every few minutes to search for movie files. The awesome animations are worth the inconvenience though. :)

Overall I think Movod Ruins ranks a well deserved 8/10. A terrific piece of work Tradley, and I award it Roguesoft's first honorary Scroll of Awesomeness:

Hope to see more games from you Tradley!

This is a pretty good game. Definitely deserves the "Roguesoft's first honorary Scroll of Awesomeness". Got stuck partly through and had to download the walkthrough... but then I tried going back to the game and all that showed was a full black screen. Window was gone. :P

P.S. By the way, that award looks awesome. :)

Thanks, there'll be a SoA award gallery on the revamped Roguesoft website, so all winners will be remembered forever. (or at least until I can't pay the bills again ;D )

I look forward to bestowing scrolls on more developers. (winks, nudges and pokes with MEG) Get game making y'all!

I'm done! I've changed the formats for the video and audio files (with iTunes). The video clips should work properly now. Also, I've managed to reduce the file size down to 60MB. I hope it works for you! If there are any more problems, let me know and I'll try to fix it.

Download it here:  http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?dtwjmign0ib

I have the soundtrack here (plus two extra songs that I didn't use in the game):

I thank everybody for all their help!

Soon in the future I'll make a new game. I hope it goes well.

I finished the game in about an hour, but still it's really cool.

And now I'm inspired to find time to work on an RPG game again. :D

EDIT: I also just noticed that the link to the extra songs is broken.

TJgamer you should use GM Toolkit to compress the in-game graphics.

Never mind. The app is already small - the problem is that you are using ridiculous bit rates on the music files! You don't need 256 kbps AAC! 128 kbps AAC will sound the same and take up half as much space. Also, unless your music is composed in stereo (I don't know, can't listen right now as I'm in class) - you don't need stereo, so you can cut the size in half again.

Well...I'm not good with this kind of advanced stuff. And I don't really know any good audio editors.
I still need to learn which formats are bigger or smaller in size.

I plan to do a remake of this game in the future with 3D rendered images, more puzzles, improved story, more video clips, and possibly voice acting.
At this moment, I'm doing some practicing with Blender, a free, open source, 3D rendering tool.
Once I'm experienced with Blender, I'll work on my upcoming game, Imagine Nation.
Then I plan to do the Movod Ruins remake afterwards.
But to improve my games and give them more variety, GameMaker 4.0 needs to be released!

I love everything about this game. The expressive hand drawn graphics, the immersive custom music, the original story, the wide variety of puzzles... it's an incredible game! How long did it take you to make TJ?

EDIT:

Z.M.'s theme is my favourite. :)

Who knows?
All I can say is, it was not short.

Just to let you know, the Movod Ruins story has not yet ended.
