We all know making a battle system is hard. Also I'm learning that while he hasn't made a full featured game before if Gan has specifications laid out he can program stuff like a boss.
A while back Silverwind posted about his Percentiles System for battles. The first page of the thread has his explanation and a code example that could practically be copy-pasted into HTML5GM.

There's even a video tutorial so basically the thread is a gold mine. I say use this system for the chat box game. I'm gonna do my homework on it too so I can help.

EDIT: If we ever want to add to this with special stats or abilities I've heard it helps to do it tabletop style to test it first... if that's possible, that is, perhaps with screen sharing or something.

More Percentile System

I think if we make battles for the game, projectiles should be super fast and dodging based on the percentiles. If you could dodge by moving your guy, then The Lag could mess you up. I'd rather we base it on their accuracy and your evade stat.
The battles could remain real-time however, and your placement and distance from enemies would affect the battle. Enemies and players both have to stop for a moment for most attacks, so attacking means you're a bit slower. We could have a base recharge time for attacks too.

Suggested 5th stat: Speed, which affects the base speed and attack speed.

Finally, since percentile stats all affect a base stat they can work the same for any object in the program.

Gan, I know it seemed like a good idea at the time but the auto scroll feature is not helping anyone. Generally if you've scrolled up it's on purpose and you're reading something or copying a link. You have got to turn it off or at least make it a check-box.

Don't turn it off, make it an option. Auto scroll is nice.
