This is a good time frame. I'm not making any promises but I'll probably be able to enter. Also, as we get closer to the start I'll see if I can donate money for some prizes.

Time frame looks good.
What would be the best way to give credit to gamemaker engine creator?

I assume we can use game making programs other than gamemaker.

Well you know what? TNTBasic, which I am very excited about, has a built in tile map system, and would be ideal for a basic RPG. I think I can build an engine fairly quickly. (I know I'll have less time than some since I forgot about this. :/)
However, I already can build a map make collisions and add various objects so - Anyone want to join forces!?
I know enough programming to implement things I will need, I'm just less experienced with making an RPG work well. Most of the things learned from SC and GM should still apply, too, so if anyone has pointers for making, say, random encounters or a good inventory/item system... Heck, there was even a template on the site for "weighted" random numbers on the site, good for battles.

We should disqualify general programming languages such as Cocoa, REALbasic, etc. and define a list of approved game makers.

The idea being that you would be required to push the boundaries provided by the game creators. For example WarHampster's 3D work in SilverCreator, and all of the early 2000 games made in GameMaker by various young developers at the time.
Title: Re: The GMG Cup!
Post by: Gan on November 28, 2010, 11:54:16 PM
I agree with Mike on this one. Having a list of approved game makers will level the game field.
This is the GameMakers Garage. It's only fair that we all use GameMakers in the contest.

I'd sooooo love to cook something up for this, but my spare time is still impossibly scarce. I'll try my best to make a small RPG, but I think the following haiku sums up my chances of getting one finished.

December

Post by: WarHampster on November 29, 2010, 07:59:44 AM
I agree with a list of allowed programs. What do people here use other than GM, SC, and TNT?
Title: Re: The GMG Cup!
Post by: EqwanoX on November 29, 2010, 10:47:28 AM
sc and gm only ;D
Title: Re: The GMG Cup!
Post by: Gan on November 29, 2010, 11:05:24 AM
Silver, that's an epic haiku.

Hmmm. Gm and Sc are both similar in features and limitations. Tnt has quite a bit more power and customizability though it's also quite a bit more complex.

Gm and Sc definitely should be allowed in the contest but I'm iffy on Tnt.
Title: Re: The GMG Cup!
Post by: Xiphos on November 29, 2010, 06:19:05 PM
Lets keep GM and SC only.
No! You can only use binary! Straight 1s and 0s.
Title: Re: The GMG Cup!
Post by: Charlo on November 29, 2010, 07:37:13 PM
I think the only person using TNT is connors.  He should tell us if he plans to be in the contest.  Hint hint.

I'm leaning towards allowing TNT.  It's not so far ahead of SC that it poses an insurmountable advantage to the rest of us.  I also really would rather not exclude anybody.
Title: Re: The GMG Cup!
Post by: Gnome on November 29, 2010, 08:12:35 PM
I'm going to allow:
SC
GM
Obj-C
TNTBasic

is this ok?
Title: Re: The GMG Cup!
Post by: WarHampster on November 29, 2010, 08:15:43 PM
I think that the idea was to disallow ObjC.

Heheh.
Title: Re: The GMG Cup!
Post by: Connors on November 30, 2010, 12:31:01 PM
@Silverwind: perhaps it would work out if we worked together on one? I always need help with music and a good storyline.
I might be willing to use Silver Creator, since we BOTH know how to use it.
@The rest: Obj-C is a far cry from SC and GM and TNT. It's abbreviation is too long as well. It should be out if you really want to have a contest with the more limited languages.
Title: Re: The GMG Cup!
Post by: EqwanoX on November 30, 2010, 12:41:08 PM
realistically, the only people that have a chance at contributing something to the contest are the people useing gm or sc

what would the genre be? let do arcade again

I'd certainly be up for that, as the chances of me finishing a game by myself are low. Gnome would have to judge the decision though, as we'd pose an advantage over other developers.

Quote

Actually, I have very little experience with Silver Creator, even the interface is foreign to me. I'm a dedicated Mac GameMaker developer, the last of an ancient bloodline; Long may GM continue to support hobbyist adventure games!

@ Silver: :D Cool, sounds good to me! 8) But we have to pick a program then, since they are allowing us to make the engine early!

@ Everyone:
So what's the final decision? I'm thinking about TNT because it already makes tile maps relatively quickly, but there's no cards or separate coding areas to organize everything... But then there's pre-made Game Maker engines so that's possible too. :-/
Title: Re: The GMG Cup!

I don't mind what engine we use since I'm not programming. I'll do music and help with the story as you suggested. As always, everyone is free to use the Roguesoft tile set: http://alstaffieri.com/gmaddons.html#graphics

Developers are also welcome to use my new (albeit incomplete) tile set if they wish:

Haha. This is going to be interesting.

We still need to deside on languages that'll be used. I'm fine with just Gm and Sc. If Tnt is added in, I'll probably use it. If Obj-C is allowed I'll stick with that.

Oh yeah, I never thought of that. What's the deal Gnome?

Personally I'd love to see everyone having a go at their own sprite sheets (I'm assuming there'll be a few RPG attempts) but I understand how long it takes.

As for resources, I'm using makeshifts sprites now to "act out" my game as I program.

But I will have to think about this one, as It may prevent games from happening, but at  the same time, I want to see some creativity.

How about you guys voice suggestions as I make a new rules page.
Title: Re: The GMG Cup!
Post by: WarHampster on December 01, 2010, 10:07:29 PM
The point of the contest is not to make a game really quickly, it's to make a really good game that pushes GM/SC. Therefore, I think the contest should be anything goes.
Title: Re: The GMG Cup!
Post by: Xiphos on December 02, 2010, 05:55:14 AM
GM and SC should be your only tools as warhampster said to push their limits and make it a fair playing ground. As for graphics, if we all had create new tile sheets I think it would ensure diversity and creativity.
Title: Re: The GMG Cup!
Post by: WarHampster on December 02, 2010, 08:21:25 AM
Also everyone should announce what they're making and keep a devlog on this forum.

Graphics - this is a game development contest, not an art contest. How about everyone uploads all the graphics that they're starting with (anything that was made before the contest) so that anyone can use them? With credit obviously :P
Title: Re: The GMG Cup!

some of silvers tiles arent lined up correctly on the grid, i just wanted to post this more consolidated version
(http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e202/eqwanoxgames/rougetiles.png)

i actually think sc vs C is fair cause its a trade off between quality and production time, C might have better capabilities but it also requires alot more time and i dont think gandolf (or anyone)has the time to invest to make a quality game. while sc is pick-up-and-program in a fraction of the time and coding you can make a decent game.

i might make something if i have the time, it would be fun to participate but i dont want a prize so if i win anything you can pass it on to the next runner up.

I think that this would be a really good opportunity to increase the library of games written in GM and SC, lets stick with them. Should we vote or something?
Title: Re: The GMG Cup!

But preparing artwork is the most expressive aspect of game development, and drawing our own sprites wouldn't make this an art contest anymore than writing our own plot would make it a story contest. I'd love to see us all having a go at drawing our own sprites, but I'd also love to see a few finished games by the end of the competition, so it's a tricky vote. How do others feel about drawing sprites?

Like how you uploaded your tile sprite sheet. Others would use it with credit to you. I think that's what he means. And like I said before our own tile sets would bring diversity and creativity. I think I'll get bored playing different RPGs with the same tiles, it'd all feel like the same game.

I'm going to use my own graphics anyway, just trying to make things easier.

What I meant was that people would post all the graphics that they're planning on using so everyone would benefit from them.

silvers tile and npc sheets cover alot, but we could use some furniture and rug tiles for houses

is anyone capable of doing anything in any language that can match what silvers done in gm? and gm is as primitive as they come. i just dont see obj-c or tnt as a threat to sc or gm, if anything, sc is a threat to gm cause its free, and superior in features and speed.

damn, i thought SAB uploaded all his old stuff somewhere but who knows.

he also made a gm wars game, it was lame but the character bios were hilarious,(as you can imagine from his youtube videos) but it talks about them like they were real people, like, what dean did after rpg neo.

also years ago there was even a better video released in flash with all the characters cinematically killing each other and the main character from my enforcers game was the last one standing, its was so fricken cool, i wish i had that. all this stuff is long gone by now though because we didnt have an upload page back then so over the years everything falls through the cracks.

anyway thats how all the gm vs sc thing started. if people want to use gm thats fine, but its fun to keep the spirit of the "war" alive

Sure. I've never attempted a 3D game, but I reckon it's fairly straightforward. Read the grid map variable every time the player moves and assign the appropriate sprite to the corresponding object?

I'll try to code a bit tonight.

A 3D game? This will be very cool if it works out, good luck Silverwind!

ALSO I'm thinking about doing a point-and click game, perhaps escaping a dungeon type area, not necessarily called Dungeon Escape but it would be like that project. I decided to finish the point-and-click engine since I'm having so much trouble with my arcade game (All I figured out was adding mouse control was very difficult and arrows were not supported) .

There are no drawing commands in GM like there are in SC.  A 3D game would have to be done hand-drawn (like I did with The Maze II) or with sprites (like Tireas Dragon did with Labyrinth).  Sprites wouldn't be too hard but if I remember correctly, Labyrinth was a pretty laggy game.

Nope. I'm using a sprite based display similar to that of Labyrinth, as Charlo pointed out.

Your memory fails you; it was a horribly laggy game! Mine will be several times worse though, as I want to display 15 tiles simultaneously, whereas Labyrinth only used 12 (I think).

I just feel like a challenge and trying something new. :) The hard part will be condensing the code.

45 minutes and a cup of tea later, here's a pic generated straight from GM:

Using this grid map:

Code: [Select]
001
100
001
100
001

The only trouble I've come across so far is having to write a different value extraction routine for each direction the player might be facing, but I remember TD having problems with that too (and he actually resorted to using four map variables). Hopefully I'll get to finish the engine off tomorrow, and then I can make a start on the floor/wall textures.

I don't remember having to use four map variables for labyrinth. I remember having a variable for every wall though and a bunch of other things. In the end I had a nice game, albeit very laggy, but nice.

Cool.  I suggest making a game with that exact graphic style and color scheme, it would be pretty surreal.

Maybe it seems easy because I haven't tried it, but to account for the player facing a different direction, couldn't you just write an algorithm to twist the entire map variable?

On second thought, that doesn't seem easy at all. :/
Title: Re: The GMG Cup!
Post by: Tireas Dragon on December 13, 2010, 10:17:57 PM
Well lets see maybe you could twist the entire map variable.
Seems to me it wouldn't be too hard

Assuming your grid is 7*7

newgrid$ = ""
y = 8
x = 1
temp = 0
REPEAT 49
  y = y - 1
  IF y = 0 THEN
    y = 7
    x = x + 1
  END IF
  temp = x * 7
  temp = x - 7
  temp = temp + y
  temp$ = MID$ oldgrid$ temp 1
  newgrid$ = newgrid$ + temp$
END REPEAT

That might work I haven't tested it and I haven't used GM in a long time. If it does work it would change
0110120
0101001
1010010
1001011
1001010
1001010
1111111
into
1111100
1000011
1000101
1111010
1000001
1111102
1001010
well that rotates 90 degrees clockwise.

Finito! http://www.mediafire.com/?1lgb10pjay4a14c

It works perfectly with hardly any lag, although it might become more noticeable with larger graphic files. I wonder why it runs so much faster than Labyrinth? I've included the source for all to use. I can't wait to make a simple game with this! :D

EDIT:

Here's a map of the test dungeon:

nicely done, i wasted like two hours trying to do this the other day before giveing up.

when i ported it to sc i was able to cut down some lines by useing numbers to determine direction instead of strings, also with sprite cropping and arrays its only about 100 lines
http://www.mediafire.com/?73zemlj4cr92ahn

just to note for anyone who may use it, the downside right now is sprites load in a certain order so if you were to add textures or any kind of detail, the walls on the right overlap the center walls, you dont notice it right now cause the walls are solid colors so they blend in. so making a specific order to load the wall sprites would be a great improvment cause then we could add detail

Yeah, but it's outdated; I had reconstructed the workspace to accommodate improved accuracy in the rendition of perspective and dimensions for the grid nodes. In other words, I had drawn them to look better and had a bigger canvas! ;D

It won't take me too long to draw the wireframes again, but it's annoying to lose any of the precious time I have these days.

GM doesn't incorporate sprite masks, I use them in photoshop to apply textures to shapes. Colouring within the lines if you will. :)

Well, I'm pretty sure I'll finish as well, so maybe it will be just between us!

And Eq, while your engine might loosely resemble a game and be acceptable in the contest, you're at a disadvantage because your "game" will have no plot, characters, or goal.  ;)

This is just to clear everything up.

Tools:
I'm just going to allow SC and GM, for the reason that, A) we all have around the same limits, and B) we all know how to use it.

Graphics:
Graphics must be original, that being said, I have no problem if you base your sprites and such off others, (like my avatar). You must of course have the original creators permission.

Theme: There is none.

Engine: As there's no reason to make your own gridcode and such when its out there, you may use other's engines, just add it in the credits or splash screen if using GM.

Development
You may work on your engines now, but no "game" work(graphics, music, etc.) should be started until the 20th (as to provide everyone with an equal chance). I would use makeshift sprites until the 20th.

Games are due January 20th. Voting begins next day.

Comments and suggestions are welcome.

-Engines can be started now, BUT actual gamemaking (graphics etc...) must be made during timeframe.
-Engines DO NOT have to be original, but the original make must approve you using it.
- Teams Are allowed.
- Any Gamemaker will do, but it has to be able to run on macs.
- Common sense Cheating rules apply.

Gnome, could you make a list of all the entries in the first post along with download links? It would save me time, as I don't have much. ;D

gladiator champion is an entree too. and i i believe you forgot gnomes oregon trail game :D

im just participating for fun, so im not accepting any prizes if i win

are we gonna vote for just 1 entree or our top three? OR an individual voting poll for each place. so everyone would vote for the 1st place winner, then when thats decided a poll starts for who gets second and so on

Let's keep it simple, everyone votes for one person (other than themselves :P)

It still appears that voting hasn't been set up. Unless we have no anonymous votes.

we dont get to do this often so it would be fun to extend it a little, by voteing for first one week then vote for second next week, or day

Sorry guys, I'm just back from work and quite knackered, but I'll have a go at it tomorrow. Ghost gave me instructions so it should be straightforward. :)

Whoops! Amended.

I still haven't played most of them yet, but I've got some time tomorrow morning to win as many as I can. ;) Very impressive turnout!

The link to view results seems to be broken. Here's an alternative link:http://www.gamemakersgarage.com/index.php?page=contest2008&action=results&poll_ident=7

I'd crap my pants if Rock, Paper, Scissors Extreme! won.

Not working for me either.

it doesnt work for me. Hey can we vote for ourselves?
Title: Re: The GMG Cup!

Maybe the problem is that the poll isn't on the main page?
Title: Re: The GMG Cup!
Post by: GMG Tim on January 25, 2011, 04:39:17 PM
Huh, peculiar. Something must've gone screwy when I transferred the site over to another account a few months ago. I guess we can either host the poll on a 3rd party "free poll" site or just cast our votes in a thread on the forum.
Title: Re: The GMG Cup!
Post by: Zoo on January 25, 2011, 06:04:59 PM
I'd rather not have it on a thread.
What if people that aren't members want to vote?
Title: Re: The GMG Cup!
Post by: WarHampster on January 25, 2011, 06:31:57 PM
I think that it would be most fair if only GMG members could vote.
Title: Re: The GMG Cup!
Post by: x on January 25, 2011, 07:04:35 PM
Well, I'm assuming that Perl and text files work, since this forum is up. Why not make one using that? You could just make the test file read/write protected and/or encrypt + encode it.

I'm also fairly sure PHP is working here since index.php is working just fine, why not whip up a poll script in PHP and maybe MySQL? I could make one if you'd like but you seem to know what you're doing with PHP by the looks of the website.
Title: Re: The GMG Cup!
Post by: Charlo on January 25, 2011, 09:04:29 PM
I agree with X, a MySQL driven PHP poll system would not be hard to write and could easily be made to be reusable.  Maybe not for this contest since that would delay voting for a bit, but I'm sure the next contest is coming right up!   :D

I think the best solution for the time being would be to use an external poll site.  They have protections for cheating and would allow non-members to vote (which I think is a good thing, it seems to me that there are at least a few lurkers).
Title: Re: The GMG Cup!
Post by: Zoo on January 26, 2011, 03:09:13 PM
I agree that we need to allow non-members to vote. My friends have played the games on my mac, and they want to vote for their favorites.
I swear, I didn't pay them to vote for me. maybe.
Title: Re: The GMG Cup!
Post by: Zoo on January 26, 2011, 03:10:47 PM
you can put a poll on blogspot. A GMG contest blog isn't a bad idea. Plus it's free.
Title: Re: The GMG Cup!
Post by: Gnome on January 28, 2011, 01:35:43 PM
non-members are of course allowed to vote!

right now we need to fix that poll though
Title: Re: The GMG Cup!
Post by: x on January 28, 2011, 06:48:27 PM
I like the blog idea. But if you want a poll system made in PHP/MySQL, I know what I am doing and can make a simple poll system with spam/double voting protection.

I say go for it. Php fries my brain but if you make somethin good, that's better than using a generic poll.

Yeh PHP is a little unstructured and annoying, but I have been working as a web developer for a year so I am pretty confident with it. Although its not my favorite language by far haha.

What does everyone else think? Custom poll?

I finally got around to playing all of the entries. This was an awesome turnout with lots of great games, but I think Gangwars takes the cake. Can't wait to see the full release!

the only thing missing was the second city which i added in the update to complete the remake, so that is the full version. i may tweak stats at some point when i get a chance to play through it again

i voted for hacksilver, it had three impressive new features, the sword fighting, field of vision, and ai pathfinding (hopefully we can get a tutorial of the pathfinding soon)

Voted for Gangwars, it's unfinished but still very well realized.

Please please don't do this. Also please please do not vote for yourself. This is a tiny forum so it would be easy for anyone to win by just telling all their friends to vote for them.

EDIT - btw can everyone who entered post here once they've voted? Not necessarily who they've voted for, just so we know that everyone who made a game has voted.
Title: Re: The GMG Cup!
Post by: Charlo on January 30, 2011, 04:17:33 PM
I agree with WarHampster, don't tell your friends to vote for a specific game.  You could tell them about the contest and urge them to play the games, but since most of them probably don't have macs it wouldn't be of much use.

Anyway, I voted for GangWars.  Hacksilver was a close second, there were some really cool gameplay mechanics but it wasn't as engrossing as GangWars.  All of the other games were good too.

I voted for gladiator wars. Even though I couldn't ever finish an arena battle due to an NPC method bug, I found it quite entertaining. Ingenious use of tiles.

this is why i recomended an indivual voting for each place

This isn't a popularity contest.  It's a best game contest.  So spamming "vote for me" all over Facebook should probably not be allowed.
Title: Re: The GMG Cup!

I think we're all mature enough to say something along the lines of "come vote in the GMG contest"

If you aren't going to post the winner than at least change the post so it says voting is over Someone!
