Title: Recent Music Projects
Post by: Connors on January 18, 2013, 01:21:26 AM
I'm gonna start posting music I write regularly as I become more skilled at putting together songs I come up with in my head, using Milky Tracker. I might incorporate other programs but so far, it's all been MK. I love writing music...

Might even improve/remix some of these.

•Warning: Downloads may be experimental and/or unfinished tracks.•

Nice.  It sounds like something exciting is about to happen.  This would be good music for an RPG.

Thanks I keep thinking the same thing about a lot of these.

I think these could work for setting two different moods for the same location.

This could be a dungeon or some such thing. I'm rather proud of the ending. Even though it's made to be a loop.

I will admit if I was going to use it as a loop it would be best to make it much longer so it doesn't get old.

NEw tool! This one was made at
http://www.beepbox.co/
which is totally cool because any one of you guys could pick it up and use it!

EDIT: Wasn't suppose to loop a bunch at the end, so I fixed it. And added a fade out. And normalized it. Because why not? ^^;

That sounds epic! I'm trying to think how it could be used. The one bar that has a slightly off rhythm makes it interesting.

In case you didn't know:
I highly recommend you try out the instrument settings for other types of sounds, and clicking and dragging above or below a note can do volume slides.

Yeah I knew that. You ought to scroll down and read the instructions. You can click and drag above or below a note to do volume slides, you can change instruments/effects, song length, pattern length, AND have multiple instruments in one channel.

Also that recent song is cool.

I made a beepbox remix of the theme from the trailer for Pixel's upcoming game, Gero Blaster. Because after only a three minute 52-second trailer the theme is already stuck in my head. That man is amazing.

Also, Connors, if you're looking for a challenge, try something from an old Megaman or Castlevania game. They are super catchy.

Flash Man's Stage's Theme is pretty sweet
Dr. Wily Stage 2 is pretty sweet
Vampire Killer
Bloody Tears
Wicked Child
Air Man

Zoo I've gotta be honest, a lot of your songs are starting to sound the same. They can get a bit monotonous at times. If I may offer some constructive criticism, you've got a lot of neat chords/progressions going, so try to write a melody to go with them. Or, you could at least try to break the song up into parts with more varying styles.

Have you tried transposing someone else's song? You might learn something from it.

Okay, here's my latest exercise, and also I believe it's my first actual attempt at composing in 5/4, which means it's kind of an atypical rythm, but it came out pretty interesting.

Basic version:

This is one of my favorite castlevania pieces, and I'm rather proud of this. There's an awkward pause that would take forever to fix, but aside from that, it's pretty good. Add a bass track and more drums, and it'd be pretty good.

Awesome work. It starts out all like Metroid, then it goes into a completely different thing. Still sounds good at the fastest speed and in triples... surprisingly good.

<snip> ...surprisingly good.
Well thanks. :L

That's interesting, it didn't lose any notes when you switched to triples, because none of them were the shortest length and/or offset from the beat.

While we're on the subject, it's not bad in triples at a slower pace. It sounds strange, but not bad. Innnnteresting.

I made one with a swing feel
http://www.beepbox.co/#4sbkbl0ectba7g0fj7i0r0w1141f3030d1111c0000h0000v0000o3210b0000ab001212DD0002039a0000000000p22NkQctceANVjb11Nm9s9Y3U1QbpSpa-hNf4tPuQ4zStgSrV2iN75tHgud25cscioqujwepwqq6KCBX8asoof0jbQ76sp8spweI3O7y7nAnk0VCPJ0WHHhjhMVe4FMJs7jjfwapqdc78mnkQf4MVj7D0sLdUCG-Qao71j4T85A0OgVegb800

This song was the inspiration:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c9Ca89gxbjU

It's strange because in order to get that syncopated feel, I had to both put it in triplets AND at the highest speed. If it weren't syncopated I could make it literally twice that fast, but then it's just no fun at all. I don't want it to sound square. xD

This is my first take of a song I've written. Unfortunately, the direct input to my computer is slightly broken, and this was the best I could get, even after editing. So just bear with it until I get a good recording with my drummer sometime.

Aww man that's really cool, It's got a good melody. I wish I could play like that.

It's also eerily familiar, did you base it off anything in particular?
Title: Re: Recent Music Projects
Post by: Zoo on February 14, 2014, 04:22:18 PM
Not that I know of, but it may have been subconscious. I added an instrumental part after the bridge, and I still gotta write lyrics and things. Like I said before, this was a really bad take, and the recording is weirdly broken and I don't know why.
Title: Re: Recent Music Projects
Post by: Connors on February 14, 2014, 10:22:12 PM
Yeah, well I can know the quality of the recording isn't good but the song composition sounds good. Maybe how well your mic works depends on the volume? Like, could it have been too loud?
Title: Re: Recent Music Projects
Post by: Zoo on February 16, 2014, 03:50:46 PM
I just plugged my pedal into my computer. There was no mic involved. I adjusted the volume so that it sounded good with the headphone feedback. I think it's primarily a software issue.

Hey your doing some cool stuff lately, Zoo!

Reupload with new effects
I remember this one, it's still pretty catchy, and I still think you should think about rewriting the first 2 tracks to be a little more interesting, and it would be an awesome song.

That's because I used my Yeti Mic instead of trying to plug my guitar into my computer. For some reason there's a latency problem with that, and the sound wasn't as good as a recording with a mic. But I meant performance-wise. I just can't play while recording XD
That took like 17 takes and it's still not perfect. I think I'd do better with a band XD

My horrible cover of Creepy Doll by Jonathan Coulton:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0ByGFPE2mRy5hVmRLODZNMnZZaUE/edit?usp=sharing

(the vocals were done in one take, so I screwed up a bit, but whatever. I'm also not a terribly good singer. XD)

If you aren't too judgmental, I'll attempt another JoCo song later, because they're fun.

Title: Re: Recent Music Projects
Post by: Zoo on April 26, 2014, 09:14:05 PM
Yeah, I'm not overly satisfied with the one-take vocals... I think I'll redo them tomorrow. Plus I screwed up the refrain by literally singing the lines twice, as opposed to using an echo. I think I'll also try singing it standing up. I was sitting down when I recorded because of my recording setup, but it really affects my voice. Plus I'm not overly familiar with the song...

Excuses excuses.... I'm just not that great of a singer XD

Well, anyway, to practice harmonizing with myself, I wrote this little tune. I left a bit in there with just guitar for a solo or something. I was trying to keep it under a minute.

I added clarinet to the bridge/solo bit and to the end bit with all the parts. I'm pretty proud of this, actually, as it seems to be a full, albeit short song with lyrics and relatively well done vocals. Or I'm completely wrong and just love the sound of my own voice? Where is everyone?

This is cool Zoo, it's a proper song. I like the lyrics, interesting and mildly humorous. In fact, the style kinda reminds me of the older Lemon Demon stuff. (That's a good thing. Really good.) The clarinet fits well.

I think the best advice I can give now is to not stop working on this stuff just because you posted some online and felt good about it... Keep going!

Also try not to sing in a key that's too low for your voice (I don't know for sure if you were but it kinda sounds that way).

So, I am in possession of a nice microphone, a guitar, and a bird. The bird is the problem here. You can't get him to shut up, which is nice sometimes, but I digress. I think a lot of people don't realize how loud birds are. Whenever I record something, I either have to move him to another room, or do noise removal. I did noise removal on this little recording, so it has very poor quality.

I beatboxed. I must admit, I'm a little rusty, and the roll could have been better, but I'm moderately impressed by how little it sucked. It actually was pretty neat. Oh well, I meant for it to be funny.

Now, it's no secret that I'm also a bit of a graphic design guy. I can't draw, but I can make an awesome album cover or desktop background. Anyway, I figured I'd make an album, so I designed a cover. I must admit, I'm really proud of this. I combined ideas from some of my favorite album covers, while keeping my own general idea. Not really a music project, per se, but it is relating to music, so I figured I'd put it here.

Ultra high resolution. Just about 4K. I'll scale it down for an actual CD, I guess.

That would look great on a CD.

...Hey this question goes out to all you GMG people: Do you know what I should look for in a mic? I don't need a very expensive one, but almost anything's better than the computer's built-in mic.
Title: Re: Recent Music Projects
Post by: Zoo on July 01, 2014, 10:44:00 AM
I have a Blue Yeti. It's kinda pricy, but it's a great stereo mic with really great quality (as long as you record in a quiet place and don't have to do noise cancellation.

http://www.amazon.com/Blue-Microphones-Multi-Pattern-Microphone-Headphones/dp/B003LRY1UE/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1404229003&sr=8-2&keywords=Blue+Yeti+microphone

That's basically my setup right there. I mean, I use Koss UR20 studio headphones and The Pop (Blue's pop filter, it came with my mic) I use Audacity for all my editing and recording. Many YouTubers and podcasters use the Yeti, because it's small and very high quality. It has great settings for surround sound and stereo (even an awesome 360 degree mode that works great for recording full bands). It also has realtime audio feedback, which really helps if you're going to do anything vocal.

If that seems like a bit much, you could go for the cheaper Blue microphones, as in my experience, Blue really knows what they're doing. I got my mic for free, so it's not as though I paid the full price.

http://www.amazon.com/Blue-Microphones-Snowball-Microphone-Headphones/dp/B003LS178W/ref=sr_1_17?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1404229063&sr=1-17

Here's the same bundle with the Snowball, another mic I see in a lot of YouTube videos. These two seem to be quite popular with commentators as well as musicians.

If you're looking for something really small, they also make the Snowflake.

http://www.amazon.com/Blue-Microphones-Snowflake-USB-Microphone/dp/B0012AUHXW/ref=sr_1_12?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1404229063&sr=1-12

Other than those, I'm sure there's other brands that make cheaper mics. I don't know about other Blue microphones, but I'm entirely satisfied with the Yeti.

Cool, I think I've heard of the Snowball before. I'll think about it when I have some more money I suppose. :)

Also I look at the lyrics again and I just realized that Twisting is a breakup song.

A really harsh and malevolent one too. That's the essence of a good TMBG song: really screwed up lyrics to an upbeat melody.

I just relistened to my second Twisting cover, and realized that the singing in it is waaaaaaaaaay worse than in the first one (and even more worse than the original)

You should try setting up a beepbox accompaniment and play the melody on guitar alone. Rather than having the melody played by both. It might be fun. Kind of like Anamanaguchi or somethin'. :)

It's actually the other way around. The guitar part is accompaniment and the Beepbox part is melody. I'm just playing the rhythm guitar part and the keyboard part.

Recently, my brother has become seemingly obsessed with monoliths, so I began to write him a rap in the style of MC Hammer (our idol*)

Quote
Since the dawn of time, you been chillin’ on the earth
Waiting for the time of humanity’s birth
Then on the moon you sit in wait
For some human guys to activate
YOUR POWER

Then in the year 2001 off of Mercury
A guy named Dave has tried diligently
To come into contact with this Mercurian groove
That everybody in the club will want to (not) move

DO THE MONOLITH
DO THE MONOLITH

Since your human homies have travelled through space
You think it’s high-time to evaluate their race
You study this Dave throughout his life on a simulated Earth
Then you grant him a godlike galactic rebirth
OF POWER
All of this plot is poorly explained
Through a seven-minute-montage of bright colorful pain
After a few shots of a monolithic tablet
And a quick runthrough of Dave trying to unravel its
POWER

DO THE MONOLITH
DO THE MONOLITH

So now these are the rules explicitly stated
To the new dance craze that we’ve created
Just stand yourself tall against the ground
And wait for the other ones to come around

When everyone you know is doin’ the dance
And it seems that everybody is caught in the trance
That’s the only time you’re allowed to break free
Of the new monolith dance that’s so groovy

*'90s rap has a special place in our hearts. It's... held up pretty well.

Speaking of things that have held up well (but seriously this time):
2001: A Space Odyssey.

I love the film, but, strangely enough, my brother has never seen it. This rap serves as a bit of an explanation (as far as I can gather).

The only problem is that it contains spoilers for a 50-year-old movie. Oh well.

A radio experiment. Listen to the whole thing, but feel free to do other things at the same time. I listened to it while reading Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, and I found it quite enjoyable.

Without spoiling anything, I can tell you that it's not really music.

Testing the Airwaves:
Quote
Every morning between 2 and 4, a local radio station, seemingly off the air, plays static. Hidden within the static are little messages or songs. Mysterious things. Many people are not aware of this. I wonder whether they have meaning, and who controls them. I wonder what their purpose is. I may never know.

This is a demo of a piece I've been working on. Its working title is "For 5 Guitars and Two Humans," but I'm sure I'll come up with something better.

It definitely seems suited for a theme to a radio program/youtube show

I'm definitely going expand upon that one some more very soon. It's one of my better songs. I'll probably just add some more verses or something. I want to leave this one instrumental, I think.

Title: Re: Recent Music Projects
Post by: Zoo on September 16, 2014, 10:07:37 PM
Over the past few months, I've been preparing to do two projects that might generate some legitimate income of some sort. Firstly, I've been wanting to produce a full-length album for some time. Secondly, I'll be making the TBMSBC: Incomplete Edition, a definitive edition of the first 300 selections with all sorts of cool extras, and possibly self-publishing it on eBook platforms and maybe a physical release. But let's go back to the album for a second.

Possible track listing goes something like this:
-Much Faster Than Light (Song About an Ego) (If I mention any songs I've already recorded, I mean an extended rerecord with more verses, or a solo or something to bring it up to that 3-4 minute mark)
-Terrestrial Astronaut
-Seven Humans, Four Robots (may change that title)
-This one folksy song thing I've been working on
-One or two covers, probably In The Aeroplane Over the Sea and something by They Might Be Giants.
-A few more original songs I have yet to write
-Two collaborations

That last bit is the one I mean to post about. If you want to write a song with a relatively sing-able melody, I'll totally write lyrics for it and put it on my album. I'd probably do my own stuff to it, as well, like adding guitar. I really want to start this stuff soon, and honestly, there's only one thing holding me back, which is my total inability to find a reasonably priced accordion. But I digress. This weekend I'm going to be doing some recording this weekend, so if you did something before then, I'd work on it then. No rush, though, I've got plenty of time for this. I wouldn't be able to pay you immediately, but I'd probably eventually be able to link a little bit of the profits (if there were any) to a Paypal account. You'd also obviously get credit on the album and all of that good stuff. On that note, if you are going to help write a song for this, feel free to use whatever tools you want, be it Beepbox, MilkyTracker, or some manner of physical instrument.

TL;DR: I want to collaborate on a song for an album I'm working on.

I was away for the weekend, on a camping trip, on the piece of land my dad bought. Really pretty. No internet.

I'm still interested in some kind of collab, maybe another Testing the Airwaves. I'm experimenting with odd stuff we could put in there. I'll probably upload some of it tomorrow.

Going to sleep now.

Just put a bunch of .wav files in a folder and send them to me. I'll put most, if not all, of them in. Avoid mp3s. They're low-quality, and I have to convert them before adding them to Audacity. (For copyright reasons, Audacity can't work in mp3 without a plugin that I never bothered to install because I couldn't find a version of the plugin on a website that didn't look shifty)

Attached is a little sample of the guitar-screeching horrors that await us in Testing the Airwaves 2.

...I may or may not actually use this, I'm just playing with Audacity.

Uploading some files to Google Docs.

PS: I put that audacity extension in there too. If you try to export an MP3, Audacity will ask you where the file is, direct it to that file. After unzipping it of course.
PPS: Soundcloud might be a better place to upload tracks that might have copyright issues on Bandcamp.

Actually, Audacity for windows needs a .dll plugin to do mp3s. It's fine, though, I figured it out. I was just skeptical of the download websites, what with the Windows and the viruses and whatnot.

Testing the Airwaves 2 is pretty cool, sorry I didn't download it sooner. I like what you did with some of the editing in the middle of songs and things it's delightfully strange. We really should do some kind of music project together.

Attachment isn't related, I was just... messing around.

PS: In the future you might want to try exporting the final product as an MP3, to reduce filesize. Especially with long tracks.

Task Manager's got a fresh new jam a-comin'

Quote
Yo me and the crew were hitting the street
With the sickest rhymes and the dopest beat
With a pocket of ones and a map on the seat
Yes we were scanning the sales for tech obsolete

CRTs, DVDs and VHS
Price so low you gotta say yes
Fifty cents for Star Trek 3
For two bucks more you get an old TV (to watch it on)

(I’m talking the search for spock)
(none of that new Trek)
(only classic Trek)

One particular sale looked pretty lame
But buried under trash was an NES game
Not Megaman or Battletoads
But a zelda cart made of real gold

It was marked as free, but I had to pay more
there’s no way I was stealing such a score
the man at the table was senile and old
he didn’t even realize he was sitting on gold

So I took it home with my CRT
And my VHS copy of Star Trek III
I popped it in, but despite all of my duress
I couldn’t get the game to play in my NES
Such a tragedy

I found a dime on the ground
I found a dime on the ground
I found a dime on the ground

Walking down the street one day, yo
Got my hip hop jams on the radio
Busting a move or dropping a rhyme?
Not now, man, look, it’s a dime.

I found a dime on the ground (Roosevelt was always my favorite president
I found a dime on the ground (Which one? I’m not a historian)
I found a dime on the ground (Which ever one’s on the dime)

I could buy myself some candy in 1910
I’d have 5 cents left, I could do it again
Earlier than that it would have been worth slightly more
Except the text that’s on the front says nineteen hundred and four

I found a dime on the ground (If it was really that old, it would have some lady on it)
I found a dime on the ground (Really, it’s from 1987)
I found a dime on the ground (This one’s got that Roosevelt guy)

I found a dime on the ground (Here man, let me look it up for you)
I found a dime on the ground (There, my favorite president is)
I found a dime on the ground (Franky D. Roosevelt. A Real OG)

A dime’s not worth that much when it stands alone
But it’s still some currency that I’d like to own
People drop dimes like time gone without a second thought
While I’m dropping rhymes on the other side with another plot
I grab a dime every day when I find it on the ground
Three months later it’s like ten dollars that I’ve found

I found a dime on the ground
I found a dime on the ground
I found a dime on the ground

I found a dime on the ground
I found a dime on the ground
I found a dime on the ground
Redone lyrics for I Found a Dime on the Ground for 32 Bits, Enter the Task Manager.

Obviously just a preview loop with the intro, will write a rap about Street Fighter to go along with it.

[WIP] Lyrics
Quote
(Round One, Fight)
Round one, fight

Yo
Hmm
Street Fighter ain’t nothing to fight with
Street Fighter ain’t nothing to fight with
Street Fighter ain’t nothing to fight with
There’s no place to hide once I step inside the arcade
Ryu, prepare for the Hadouken
Bam! Aw, man! I (Street Fighter voice) win!
Enter my high score.

Not button mashing, smashing the competition
My mad combos lead to arcade superstition
My high score said -- you’re dead
If this were Mortal Kombat, you’d have lost your frolfing head.
Blanka? Who is that? Hey yo, Ryu is back!
Making players go boo hoo! Saying that I hack.
I fear no one, oh no, here come
The Chun-Li flying kick, my combo’s super sick

I put my hands on the machine, you lose quarter
You start crying, I restore order
In the arcade, back away now
There’s nothing to see here
Just a sore loser who tried and failed to join the big leagues
Now why try and test the arcade’s highness
Blessed since my birth, I shoryuken your very best
Cause I rule these streets, and no one beats my score
I’m so hardcore, ‘cuz my dad works at Nintendo

Here's just a little song I made in case you ever need to make an '80s action film. I'm pretty sure I stole all of the tracks from something or other, but it sounds cool so whatever.

EDIT: I finished up this song into something somewhat like the songs on Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon's soundtrack. I'm actually moderately proud of this. It sounds like a crappy MIDI, yeah, but it's supposed to sound like '80s synth, so I'm not far off.

Great job, it was good enough I had to listen to it a couple times to get all the lyrics. For a song recorded on a cruddy iPhone mic it comes through just fine. It's got a subtle yet not at all subtle mean spirited feel to some lines, but overall it feels truly heartfelt and interesting.

Glad you like it. I was going for a bit more of a Front Bottoms/Mountain Goats feel on this one, but I don't know how well that came across. Low-fi is nice and all, but I should really buy a new mic.

I suppose I should have given you guys the lyrics. Hang on a moment, I'll post them (they're on my phone).

"Marie

----verse one
I like the look you make before you laugh
I like the look that's on your face
I like the messy room with the lightbulb no one bothered to replace
(Alt. I like the broken light in the bathroom no one bothered to replace)
And I like staying up till I fall asleep from staying up too late
And I like to pull at strings a bit too hard till they break and separate
Into the two parts
Of my broken
String.

----verse two
The best of luck
I wish you the best of luck
Is what I said the day
You shot me in the back as I tried to walk away
And you said
Don't leave me
I can't stand to be alone
But I'm fading quickly now
And I'm hanging up the phone
One last time

----refrain opening
And I am not running from anything
I am not running from you
I will look you in the eyes and say just what I'm talking to

----refrain
You are a vile creature
Fully unencumbered by the grossness that consumes you
And devours you from within
You've got big problems
The kind I don't want to deal with
Right now"

I hope you guys like these vocal-heavy, simple-chord solo pieces, because I've been working majorly to improve my lyrical skills.

I like how this one came out I've been playing with different rhythms. It's in 5/4.
EDIT: big update to the song

I might use that waltz as the main theme to Pipesmoke, a radio show I'm thinking about writing featuring a cowboy-gone-detective named Ames and a tape recorder from the future named Newcomen as they solve mysteries in Victorian England. Also, if you have any ideas for such a show, I'd like to hear them.

Just a heads up, if you go with that plot I'm probably gonna yell at you at some point during the story because I have this thing with time-travel... There are just so many potential plot-holes and weird stuff when time-travel is involved.

On the other hand, Victorian England can be a fun setting so I definitely look forward to it.

I'd just like to mention that I've made arrangements of the Tetris A theme and the theme from Howl's Moving Castle on accordion (I have legit accordion skillz now), but I haven't recorded them yet. I will as soon as I've replaced my microphone.

The new audio setup I ordered is arriving soon, so I figured I'd post a list of the new equipment I got.

Focusrite 2i2 Audio Interface
Wasn't exactly sure what exactly I needed out of an audio interface, but this one looked good. The preamps are apparently pretty great, and it got great reviews. It's actually arrived and I can confirm that it's really nice, and pretty affordable if you're getting into studio work. It also has 2 inputs, hence the name (2 input 2 output). I anticipate wanting to record more than one part at once in the future, so this just seemed like a logical choice.

MXL 770 mic
It's a fairly high-end cardoid mic, came with a nice shock mount, and recordings of it I've heard sounded great. It was on sale for $70, and sounds nicer than my previous ~$100 mic, so that's nice. Can't say much about it, because I haven't recorded anything with it. Will post demos of the setup once it comes in the mail. You can find these things on Amazon for fairly good prices if you have any interest in starting a home studio.

Here's what music sounds like recorded with it. This is just a quick thing, not perfect, got more mixing to do and whatnot, but it's good for now.

The Aeroplane thing is the same as before except with a different clarinet solo. It's at like, a minute in or something if you don't care enough to listen to the whole thing again.

The "Aeroplane improv" is really nice, the clarinet is good, except the theremin sound can be sooooo out of tune that it's gonna drive me crazy. I NOTICE THESE THINGS, MAN.
Title: Re: Recent Music Projects
Post by: Zoo on March 30, 2015, 05:48:40 PM
I might redo/remove the theremin track. The clarinet track was super out of tune too. I redid it, but my clarinet skills are not what they should be, and it's still not that great, but the solo's cooler now, so whatever.

I haven't beepboxed in a while. Anyway, here's a Beepbox version of Oslo in the Summertime by Of Montreal, except it's in the wrong key, because I made it without listening to the original, figuring I could change the key. I can, but that makes it too high.

Wrong key:

Right key, but way too high:
