Title: Gan's Required "To-Play" list
Post by: Gnome on August 23, 2012, 09:08:57 PM
Gan wants to go into the game industry, but so far his experience with games is "Flash games and League of Legends"

This list's goals is to give Gan wide exposure to video games as a whole. I have picked, what I believe to be the best in their respective genres (on the Mac OS)

Also important to mention again these are all Mac OS. (Wesnoth is iOS)

First Person Shooter:

Halo: Combat Evolved - what popularized the modern FPS, very good, and the demo is free!

Left 4 Dead - Best Co-Op Shooter around, would recommend if kurt or moe has it.

RPG:

Fallout 1 - A great example of a classic turn based RPG. Mac OS version is hard to track down and expensive, however, so torrenting will almost be required.

Knights of the Old Republic - A good example of a Turn/Action RPG, and STAR WARS!

RTS:
Star Wars: Empire at War - Good example of Space and Land RTS

Turn Based Strategy
Civilization 5 - Good example of Strategy on a large Scale

Battle for Wesnoth - Best turn based iOS game, plays a lot like Fire Emblem.

Probably not gonna happen. My dad is going thermonuclear war on anyone who plays games in the household. Cause games take up time and are inconvenient for him.

As dumb as it sounds playing bad games can give you some insight if you have good games to compare with. I've seen numerous mistakes that occur in more than one game and can be easily avoided. I really hate the ones which clearly had a huge art budget and yet they are long and repetitive and dull.

2 things wrong with this post:

1. You play league of legends all the time

2. You're like a Sophomore at college and you're dad still won't let you play video games... HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

1. Ocarina of time. No excuse gan. You have an N64, and it's the greatest game ever.

As for halo, he doesn't have an Xbox. Don't waste your money. TF2 is free, for mac, and the most fun you'll have with an FPS.

Or goldeneye 007 for N64 is pretty awesome. But its best when played multiplayer.

Oh, and for RTS: Age of Empires. You have a slightly old Mac running 10.5 or lower, and I think the Mac version will work. It's tons of fun.

I completely agree that you should play more games. Good authors read a lot, so good programmers and game makers should play a lot of games.

Play a Zelda game. OoT is a MUST PLAY for anyone with an N64. It's probably the best Zelda game, and a great introduction to the series.

I played Age of Empires and I bought Age of Mythology and those are some fun RTS games. I wasn't exactly a pro at them but whatever.

K. But no one should EVER be forced to buy a modern system by online people who really have no control over him.  :P

That was the point of the list being Mac OS only  ;)

I had tons more games I'd recommend over what I said, but they aren't on mac. (just an example: I have 35 games on steam. 6 of which are OS X compatible.)

I remember trying the new Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts game on my friends 360 and it was way cool. It's a truly unique game.

NO! We do not speak of the dark times. Banjo Kazooey is NOT a car game. That is a disgrace to the series and rareware itself. Banjo Kazooey is an N64 platformer. It's even been said to be better that Super Mario 64.

That was a GREAT platformer, I'm talking about a different game on a different system. It's a car game, but it's also an action game and a puzzle game. It's probably best that they tried to do something different with it, people would have gotten bent out of shape if it was a platformer and didn't live up to the originals.

Being a Mac-only gamer is hard since only the popular games (not necessarily good ones) ever get ported, and it usually takes a while.  I enjoy my Windows 7 PC.   :-X

If you're checking out the Civ series, get Civ 3.  It should be cheap since it's a decade old.  Civ 3 is universally loved, while Civ 5 has a lot of detractors (I've never played it myself).

Here, here! Civ 3 has is considerably better than Civ 4 at any rate. It's a lovely balanced game.

That aside, I didn't know you were trying to break into the game industry Gan :D Exiting stuff I say! What got you thinking along those lines?

EDIT:

I always come back to Yipe! for RPG ideas. The more I study it the more I realise that it's got everything a fun game needs, and none of the extra stuff a game doesn't need. People just aren't making games like it anymore.

I looked at the website and I can't really play any of the games at the moment but I have one question:
Was there ever a Yipe! IV?

Perfect Dark for N64 is pretty awesome.
