Title: Terraria
Post by: GMG Kurt on February 16, 2012, 08:09:20 PM
Its a super fun game. Kinda like a 2d minecraft. It's super hard and I always die. playing it for the first time is like playing mc for the first time, not knowing what your doing, and loving it.

it's a pc game, but here's a mac wrapper for it.
http://www.mediafire.com/?j09e70n8v37tfha

place this in the place exe area (given by Gan)

Guys, this is an intense amount of fun!

Okay, I'm hosting a server for this game:
IP: 174.70.154.239
Port: 7777
Password: gmg

Make sure to log in and say hi! Play around, build stuff, kill zombies and explore the GMG palace! You'll spawn in the GMG palace as soon as you log in.

Edit: Sorry Kurt, your house is now officially named the GMG palace. Oh and yeah..  you got a basement now.
Edit2: Sorry Kurt again... I accidentally trapped a demon eye in your house... err, the GMG palace.
Edit3: If you can't get the game working, you can download this already put together package.
Edit4: If you guys want to host servers, here's the mac server package.

Unfortunately the server runs on my laptop. I can't guarantee it'll be online much.

So here is our world so far. (Attached below)

If any of you can reliably host, please, feel free to! (I've attached the server for Terraria up above)
If you want to host and need help, just post.

It's not free, but you can easily buy it on Steam for $10.  After that you should be able to play the bootlegged Mac version without feeling guilty.  That's what I'm going to do.   This is a fun game!   :D

That's a good idea. I might do that. It randomly quits every 45 minutes or so for me. Do you think that has anything to do with it being illegal?

Awesome Connors! Check it out, have fun.

I raided a gigantic dungeon hidden under the GMG HQ. And I did some remodeling. I have a spear now. I found it in the dungeon. It kills monsters like nobody's buisness

The GMG palace looks fantastic!
Edit: You guys have made the underground caverns and catacombs huge! It's like they go for miles in all sorts of directions.

Circuit and I had some great adventures today. We built a ton of the sky bridge, figured out where the monsters were coming from. Plugged up the corrupted lands so adventurers could be safe.
We then continued to find the source of the baddies within the corrupted lands. We found these alters that we couldn't destroy. And this strange stone we couldn't mine.
We discovered some awful and dangerous new creatures.
Our mission tomorrow is to destroy those alters and stop the bad guys. How?
We have many new NPCs in our Palace. Especially a Demolitionist.
We got dynamite. Those alters are gonna blow straight to hades.

This mission is dangerous though. We need all the help we can get. Can you guys help us? The server will be up tomorrow after 4 pm central standard time.

We also covered much of the desert, grass and corrupted lands with torches. So go right if you want an adventure. There should be a safe house within reasonable distance just in case night falls.

Hey guys, we have a new mission:

Quote
Hey Guys. This is the skelleton stadium. It's sole purpose is to destroy the skelleton curse.

This will be our next mission. We need 3+ people.

How it works: 2 people stand in the stadium. One person goes in the temple and initiates the curse. That 1 person runs into the stadium. All 3 start fighting. Optionally there could be a 4th person outside the stadium waiting as backup in case someone dies.

When someone dies they get sent to the spawn point here...

In which they immediately re-enter the stadium and battle. That way we constantly keep the skelleton's attention. Long enough to kill it.

Here. I will give a 1 person example

Sigh. Screen recording software is crap...

Just a sec

See. Just like that. Except I was super laggy cause of the screen recording software.

With this stadium and 3+ people, we will win
Skelleton Stadium Instructions (http://cl.ly/3g2j2S3T3u1u352O223Q)(Skelleton Stadium Test Battle Video Below)

This is our next mission. I haven't set a date, but the stadium is ready.

Who's up for it?
Title: Re: Terraria
Post by: Gan on February 20, 2012, 11:41:47 PM
Oh, I forgot to mention.

There's a giant stairway below the temple that's guarded by a giant skelleton head.
You can't enter it until the skelleton curse is broken.

This leads me to believe that there is treasure beyond your wildest dreams down there.

Server's now down cause the battery is dead. It'll be up in around 5-10 hours.
Title: Re: Terraria
Post by: Gan on February 21, 2012, 10:30:47 AM
I should probably recap what happened last night:

Zoo led an expedition to a temple right of the corrupted lands. We built a safe house above the temple cause every time we tried to go into the temple, a giant skelleton head would kill us.
We talked to the old man and he said he was cursed. I activated the curse and a giant skelleton appeared and promptly killed us.
After we made the safe house, an Arms Dealer showed up. He died a couple times but re-appears every day. So we bought these super awesome machine gun like weapons. Called Minisharks.
Kurt got on and we bought him one. Though Kirt had to travel 5000 feet from the GMG Palace to get to our position.
The minisharks are epic. They shoot super fast lighted bullets that hit 20+ each. Enough to mow down many enemies.
With 3 people online we attempted to kill the skeleton a few more times. Changing our strategy each time.
Our best attempt got the skelleton to half HP. He used his head roll and killed all of us.

So we put our brains together and Zoo had to go.
We figured if we could jump and move vertically then we could dodge the head roll. But his arms are too long. So we needed a bigger fighting space.

Kurt and I extended the sky bridge to the temple, lighted it and Kurt left. I spent some time making the stadium.
I figure if we're spread out in the stadium, he can't kill us all cause he can only attack one person at a time.

Optionally if you guys want a different strategy, we could tear down a stadium wall and put your magic boots to good use.
The fight would be carried out onto the sky bridge and you could run fast enough to stay ahead to not be hit but to keep hitting the skelleton with Minisharks.

I can only imagine what that gaint skelleton head is protecting inside the temple...
Nuclear warheads? Infinite riches? Spell scrolls? Beautiful princesses? Dead rats?

Whatever's down there... I'm sure it can help us destroy the demon alters and the Destroyer of Worlds in the corrupted lands.

Terraria has been discontinued. No more updates(besides bug fixes), no more bosses, no more enhancements, not even a mod engine for players to mod freely.

I just hope they release it as open source with the development kit.

Edit:
A new game being made similar to Terraria by some of the Terraria crew is called Starbound. It'll be like Terraria but with more storyline. And possibly narration. They say it'll be better.
I can only hope.
Edit 2:
Starbound is coming out this Summer.

Recap of today:

Zoo, Kurt, Circuit and I destroyed Skelletron. In the Skelletron Stadium. Worked beautifully. Then we explored the temple.
But we still couldn't destroy the temple walls and got stuck. Research showed we needed a special Nightmare Pick Axe. Made of wormy scales.
Eventually Connors got on and Zoo and Kurt left.

We then went down into the corrupted lands, destroyed glowing orbs and summoned the Destroyer of Worlds(big wormy). It took a lot of maneuvering and gun fire but we killed it. And got the scales.
Circuit made all of us Nightmare Pick Axes and we went deep into the temple. We mined, put platforms up and lit the place.
We got far, died quite a few times though.
Eventually we got deep, sectioned off an area and just started digging through the wall to explore the outside of the temple.

I went off to get wood and silk to make a bed to put in the temple. That's when Connors and Circuit had to leave.

Possible Future Missions:
(1) Explore the rest of the temple that we sectioned off.
(2) Explore the caves we dug through the wall of the temple.
(3) Figure out how to destroy the demon alters.
(4) Dig to the center of the Earth from the GMG Palace.
(5) Extend the sky bridge over the desert to the GMG Palace for fast and safe travel.
(6) Explore the unexplored regions to the left of the GMG Palace and the right of the Skelletron Stadium.

What would you want to do?

I'll be on sometime later.  I'd like to finish exploring the temple (not the caves, just the part we sectioned off) and start digging to the center of the earth.  Also, I made a "suspicious looking eye" so that we can summon the Eye of Cthulhu.

Recap of today:

Whole bunch of people got online. Had fun. Circuit and I extended the Sky Bridge all the way to the GMG Palace. So there is now a safe and fast route over the land.
Then Circuit and I destroyed a giant Eye that he summoned.
Then we decided to dig to the center of the Earth.

Right now I am 2713 feet below surface and still digging. Circuit had to call it a night. We reached lava and we're draining a ton of it.
I'm still working.

I forget anything that happened?

Edit:
We also had fun draining water into the lava. It creates a valuable stone called Obsidian.

Edit 2:
Whoa! I'm at the 3000 feet underground mark! I can see lava veins through the rocks. Way cool.
Oh yeah, and a creature called a Fire Imp started attacking me. A creature that can shoot fire bolts through walls. Very annoying.
Title: Re: Terraria
Post by: Gan on February 22, 2012, 11:19:56 PM
I've repaired the whole tunnel and lit it. It's 3000 feet of greatness. You can fall straight on through, just grapple yourself at the very end.

I've discovered the underworld. It's crazy. It could be a new mission: Explore the Underworld.

For those who don't know, this tunnel to the center of Terraria is right underneath the GMG Palace. It has a sign next to it. Make sure you have a grapple hook when you go down though.

Ah man, so excited. I'll leave the server running all night but I'll have to turn my computer off tomorrow morning to save battery life.
I sure wish my new power cord would get here.
Title: Re: Terraria
Post by: Connors on February 22, 2012, 11:53:48 PM
You can break a fall of any speed with two blocks deep of water. Just thought you ought to know, you know, since you actually built a hellevator.
In other new, my Connors character and his goggles will still be visiting the server often because that was cool. But I also want to go in a singleplayer world with a new character and try to get all the stuff myself. Without borrowing or cheating items. I might even put it on... Hard difficulty. Where you drop your items on death. You know, if I'm feeling foolhardy at the time. You have to play real carefully and organise your extra stuff in teh chests.
Also thank you again for the grappling hook it is the most fun item ever except perhaps for the wings.

Ah yeah, sad. I already posted about that.

Anywho, Circuit came online and me and him explored Hades.

Then he left and I explored Hades. I went from building to building, collection cool items. Though I got no where. Just cool items. Couldn't find the origin.

Ah, I went left. Going right might produce different results.

Also, maybe you guys think we should keep digging down and see what's under hades?

There's an invisible boundary past Hades. Hades is empty except for monsters and items.

I have a G3 ibook running Ubuntu and I figure I can make it run Terraria server.

There are two terraria server mod engines that work on Ubuntu.
TDSM- I here it's highly advanced and fast but may be dead.
TShock- I know little about it but some say it is the preferred mod server.

From both, I hear you can run on linux and use them to add mods into the game.
They both support Terraria 1.1.
What do you guys think?

I know what you mean.  I wish I hadn't duplicated all that stuff.  It took away all of the challenge and made the game less interesting.  I hope I didn't ruin the game for you.

You guys wanna fight the wall of flesh?
I'd like to but I'm not sure that we're ready for that.  We need to build a long bridge along the surface of the underworld before we do that, because the wall will constantly chase us and force us to run away.  Also, we'll need really good weapons and armor.

Server is up! It's mission time!

I'll be joining. Skipping class cause my dog is sick. So I could go AFK at random times to take care of my dog. She's looking pretty miserable right now.

As for the 1.1 server, I'm gonna try to get it working but I may only be able to get it working on my new mac instead of the G3. Cause the G3 is a pretty sucky machine.
So, at least that'll be an upgrade even though we won't have a dedicated server.
Title: Re: Terraria

Sick dog? Sounds awful. My dog once got carsick on a trip. He was sitting on my lap in the back seat of the car. I don't want to go into detail, but basicly he exploded out both ends. Not pretty. I can't go on, because the computer is taken by my brother, and this piece of junk couldn't play terraria if I could even stand the lag. Might be on later though.

We're getting megasharks, right? I mean, those should be good enough. And with 4 or 5 fully equiped in GMG armor and minisharks could easily beat it I think.
If we can get Kurt, Circuit, Gan, Connors and I all on at once, I doubt there would be any trouble beating it. I mean, 4 of us together beat skeletron, and it was no contest.

Big update!

I got the server upgraded to TShock Terraria 1.1.1. Meaning not only do we get the latest features, it's now mod-able! So go to TShock's forum, find mods you like, post them here and I can put them in.

The reason I couldn't upgrade to the latest 1.2.3 was because I couldn't get the client to work on mac. So we'll have to settle with 1.1.1.

I've attached the Terraria 1.1.1 client to the end of this post.

Now, with this update comes bugs. I have figured ways to fix these bugs.
When you download the client, go to settings and do this:
 - Change the lighting to Retro. *VERY IMPORTANT* If you don't, you'll experience slowness and incredible memory usage. As well as graphical bugs.
 - Change Graphical Quality to Low.
 - Turn background off.

That's it. Then just log in as normal. Having the window at it's normal size will allow a fast and lag-less game. Expanding the window will cause the game to be slower.

Hope you guys enjoy this. I believe it also fixes the Wall of Flesh bug/glitch.

Post by: Zoo on February 25, 2012, 09:32:30 AM
What new features are there? Are they worth giving up graphics for? We'll need to start our characters all over.
And, is there a mod that would give you infinite items? I could build some pretty neat stuff in SP with that.

Old characters work just fine with 1.1.1. If they don't, that means Terraria is looking for them in a different folder. You just need to move your old character file to the new folder and it'll work.

As for sound... I'm gonna look into that.

There is a new biome, The Hallow, that will be created when the hell boss is defeated.
Removed obsolete lighting code, reducing both RAM usage and world save file sizes.
Added several small features to world gen.
Tweaked the way and amount of Underground Mushroom biome spawn.
Demon Torches now appear in shelters generated in the underworld.
Underground cabins may randomly spawn around chests.
Different styles of wall can now be placed next to one another without showing the background between them, allowing for more creative building.
When nearing the top of the world, the player will now leave the atmosphere and be less affected by gravity.
There are now three types of traps that are generated underground.  Watch your step!
    Cacti no longer damage players.

Game Interface

Items being held by the mouse will now be used by left clicking.  This allows the player to place objects without putting them on the hotbar.  Right clicking will now drop the item.
Placing objects on grass will now destroy the grass.
The crafting menu now scales to fit the size of the screen.
When the inventory is open, the number of the selected item in the hotbar will appear in green.
There is a new NPC housing interface that can be used to assign living areas to NPCís.  This interface will also tell you if a room is missing any requirements.

Misc

There is a new music track for The Hallow biome.
Underground Corruption has its own music track.
Underground Hallow has its own music track.
There are two new boss music tracks.
Greatly reduced world save file sizes.
Decreased tile frame detection time by 15%.
Your trash can is now emptied when you die.
Added an auto select hotkey that will pick a tool from the playerís inventory based on what their mouse is hovering over.  This defaults to Left Shift.
All players will now leave behind tombstones when killed.
There is now a random option in the player creation menu.
Female players now have separate armor graphics.
Added a new mechanical system!  Holding a mechanical item will display the wire grid to create interesting new devices.
There are new overworld backgrounds for each biome!

Bug Fixes

Fixed a bug that would cause the server to think a player is dead if he/she reaches 1 HP without dying.
Fixed a bug that wouldnít allow players to craft from the ammo slot.
Fixed a bug that would crash the game when player tried to draw water outside the bounds of the world.
Fixed a bug that would cause mana regen to ignore stat bonuses given by armor or accessories
Fixed a bug that would sometimes cause the game to crash when growing Underground Jungle grass.
Wooden Platforms no longer attach to non-solid objects.
Placing and removing items during the placing animation will no longer destroy the item when it is collected.
Fixed a bug that would cause graphical abnormalities when the lighting changes dramatically.
The FPS display (F10) shows the correct number.
Fixed a bug that swapped the lighting of players pants and head armor.
Fixed a problem that would cause water to settle in strange positions.
Fixed a problem that caused objects with transparency to appear darker than they should.
Then on top of those changes, there's also the TShock updates. Allowing smoother gameplay, less bugs and mod-ability.

Where can I find mods?

Somewhere in here:
http://tshock.co/xf/index.php

I'm attempted to fix bugs. If I can't, I'm gonna try getting the client to work with Wine.

Actually, the problem is that the player editor is for an OLDER version of terraria.

We can stay at 1.0.6 until a reliable newest version comes out for mac.

I dunno if the Wall of Flesh bug is fixed in TShock 1.0.6 but hey, we'll having modding ability. So we can probably mod him back in.

And my players might work?
Where do I download it?

1.0.6.1 download is on the first page of this thread.

I'll have to get the TShock 1.6.0.1 server running though.

Haha, it seems that if you upgrade, there's no turning back.

Good thing I keep backups.

Anywho, in Terraria 1.1.1 they have an option to change cursor color in the settings menu. Very handy, I changed my cursor color to white.

We're upgrading to Terraria 1.1.2! The latest!

AHAHA YEAAAH! Thank you YouTube. That's where I found it for Mac.

It's attached. Fixes sound bugs, makes it faster and no more crashes!

Edit: Slight annoyance. You cannot put the game in a folder containing a space. If you do, it will not work.

I also have good and bad news:

Circuit and I destroyed the Wall of Flesh. That was the good news.

Now corruption will spread freely over the world, new monsters have arrouse, and all monsters have increased in HP and strength. That is the bad news.

The Hallowed Biome, many new species such as the Pixie, the Pearl Rock, Cobalt, and Mithril are now available. That is more good news.

Our mission: We need to destroy all of the corruption before it takes over the GMG Palace.
Oh and yeah, beware of werewolves.

Hey guys, we're starting everything new to get a full experience of the new and latest 1.1.2 features!

Make sure to make new characters.

Title: Re: Terraria

Yeah, we reached a unanimous decision.
Cheating and using items/characters from other servers just ruins the fun.

Plus when we defeated the Hades boss, I realized we weren't ready to handle the increased difficulty and spread of corruption.

Oh and yeah, there's a whole bunch of new stuff if you make a new character and a new world with 1.1.2.
Title: Re: Terraria
Post by: Zoo on February 26, 2012, 01:07:21 PM
You should put up a map where everyone's allowed to cheat once a week or something so we can build cool things together without the work of getting all the stuff.

Can I use my old character?
Title: Re: Terraria
Post by: Gan on February 26, 2012, 01:15:40 PM
New characters only. Starting from scratch.

If my computer was powerful enough I'd host 2 servers. (1) The old GMG World where anything goes and (2) The new GMG World with the rules.

I've been looking into teleportation pads and there aren't any actual teleportation pad mods made yet.

I'm thinking I'd like to make a mod where the user can step on a pad and be teleported. To another pad of the same color.

theres not very many mods for terraria. Thats why I said we should make a gigantic mod library for it.

idea for the tele pad.
there are circuits where if u step on pad #2 you'd go to #3 and keep going up till it loops back to #1. That way your  not bound by colors, but you can create many different circuits.

Vanilla=no mods.
That's not exactly true though. I just don't like the server mods. They're confusing.  The commands are weird.

Terraria has enough in it that it doesn't need many mods. I can see why you'd want teleportation pads, but isn't that what beds are for? I enjoyed the sense of adventure one gets when traveling in Terraria. If you just poof there, is it really a game? If you can justify warps and warp pads and stuff as not cheating, you could justify character editors. One edits a character to not waste time getting the items. One uses warp pads to not waste time getting from point A to point B.

I don't like server commands either. If we are to make mods, they need to be graphical mods. Not command mods.
They must require no typing.

But when it comes to the point that your just wasting time, and not adding to the experience of the game. Plus the pads would require something like 10 iron to make

You're right Kurt.

Anywho, the whole point of me hosting Terraria is to bring the GMG closer together so we can have fun and work together! To do missions and to relax.

Therefore I am setting restrictions on Terraria. Terraria will only be hosted 1 night a week. From 4pm central time to 12pm central time.

What day would you guys have Terraria to be hosted on?

Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday are all good nights for me.

Is it now OK to develop our characters outside of the GMG server world?  I don't like having to compete with everyone for items and natural resources.  It makes it hard to enjoy playing with other people.  If I had to gather as much stuff as I possibly could in an 8-hour period once every week, it would just be terrible.

Yeah, you can develop your characters outside of the GMG world. I would suggest making your own world, not cheating, gathering, ect. I think it'd have a positive effect if you guys collected stuff on other worlds just for when we go on missions. Probably make it a bit more enjoyable.

Looks like the window has narrowed to Sunday or Saturday. Any other votes?

Not tuesday. Thursday is my favorite day of the week, so, I'm in favor of that. It's good that you're only doing it once a week now. I was playing way too much. Also, it will be more likely to run into people online that way.

Title: Re: Terraria

GMG party server was up last night. Zoo got on, then Circuit, then I.

We battled creatures, built a bit, plotted to kill Circuit in his sleep, and started a plan to flood Hades with water.

Zoo left shortly after we starting making the tunnel to hades. We explored deeply, found much treasure and underground houses but we weren't able to locate the mechanic.

So after digging we came up with the idea to flood hades. After dumping lots of water down the tunnel we realized that water evaporates in Hades. So in order to flood we'd need a ton of water to dump at the same time.
So we started building the water resevoir above hades. I dumped water into it but the resevoir wasn't big enough. The tunnel flooded for 2000m. So Circuit and I made the resevoir bigger and bigger to accomodate all the water clogging the tunnels.

The tunnel has been cleared and the resevoir is huge.
The plan is to find a mechanic, wire dynamite to the bottom of the resevoir, hit the switch and BOOOOOOOOM!
All that water will flood into hades at the same time. No time to evaporate. Thus we'll have a pool of water to safetly turn magma into obsidian. Then we'll be able to safetly find shadow chests and super awesome items.

I believe the plan was for everyone to do the prototype jam instead of Terraria.

Though there seems to have been a lack of organization.
Anywho, I just woke up. Been at a lock-in all night. I guess I can turn on the server for anyone who wants to play.
I won't be on for an hour or two, I gotta vacuum the house.
