Title: Balloon Pop ~ iPhone
Post by: Gan on May 26, 2010, 09:04:34 PM
Hey guys, this is it.
What is it you may ask?
Well, it is Balloon Pop. The application from the Eq(Sc) Vs Gan(Obj-C) challenge (http://www.gamemakersgarage.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=looneybin;action=display;num=1267396580), now for the iPhone.
Move with your left thumb, aim and shoot with a finger on your right hand.

Nuke:(http://f.cl.ly/items/fa9433f1bfbbac398cb8/Nuke.png)

It is fully playable. I've marked today as my release to the public day and this is what I have. All it needs now is personal highscores, bullet and balloon popping noises, warning screen for Seizurific, nuke special effects, intro screen before Beginner mode and the storyline screen... which is:
"This is our training facility - Balloon Pop. Your goal, young sniper, is to become the best...."
Short, sweet, and to the point.

What do you guys think?

Woh! Awesome Gan! :D Finally the GMG sees another completed game, and an iPhone game...

Can't wait to see it on the AppStore. :)

I'm thinking of making it $1 though depending on sales I'll probably make a free ad version.

Soyea.
I was talking w/ gandolf yesterday as we looked at a new UI for the game room.
Just a link to what I came up with: http://screencast.com/t/NTJlMjg3N

I THINK gandolf liked it.
Can you give me some feedback?

If you're going to sell this then you had better be paying Myst and Hendo.

Looks like a fun distraction :)

Coooooll! When does it hit the app store?
Title: Re: Balloon Pop ~ iPhone

Here's my todo list:
*Add on gameplay screen Instructions before going into play.
*Sounds, balloon popping, gun shooting.
*Fix machine gun when firing
*Fix global/personal highscores when touch end not on highscore list
*Make balls smaller on each level after Beginner
*Add instructions on beginner and warning on last
*Add Nuke graphics
*Fix memory issues
*Start loading global highscores after inserting name.

When I dwindle this list down to nothing than it should be ready. Well, if we aren't putting in any graphics from Mystron or Hendo.

Hey guys, I've kinda been wondering about the idea of multiple bonuses.

For example:
The sniper is shooting around and notices a machine gun to his left. He grabs it and starts firing. Then before the machine gun bonus is used up a bouncy bullet bonus appears and he grabs that. Now his machine guy is a bouncy bullet machine gun. In which all of the massive amount of bullets coming out of his barrel are now ricocheting around the room like crazy. Then bam, a 4 directional bonus appears near the bottom and he grabs it. Now he is shooting bouncy bullet machine guns in all 4 directions. But wait! Then he sees a Matrix Mode bonus out of the corner of his eye. He snatches it and now he is in deadly control of a time bending bouncy 4 directional machine gun of fury! He thinks he's doing pretty well taking care of them balloons, that is, until he stumbles upon the Nuke.

Now with this idea it most likely wouldn't be that crazy but it gives the chance of utilizing multiple bonuses at once. Gives tons of combos and may take a bit more skill and luck on the player's side.

What do you guys think of this idea?

-Gan
P.S. My list has shortened a bit:
*Add on gameplay screen Instructions before going into play.
*Sounds, balloon popping, gun shooting.
*Make balls smaller on each level after Beginner
*Add instructions on beginner and warning on last
*Add Nuke graphics
*Fix memory issues

P.S.S. At this pace it'll be all polished up for the app store by tomorrow.

I think 4 things:

1. The font needs a drastic change. It doesn't really fit the look of the game at all. Use something like BankGothic or VirtualDJ. Futuristic fonts go with shooting games - not jungle/script (Papyrus, am I right?) font.

2. No story. Please, no story. People don't want to be a young sniper in a training facility. They want to pop some balloons and have fun beating scores.

3. Fill in the background of any buttons with another shade. Helps them stand out.

4. Hypothetically, online leaderboards would add replayability. If you can add those, do so. You'll be thanking yourself later.

Hopefully I could help. :) Good luck with distribution!

Your graphics are pretty good though I think I'll save them until Balloon Pop 2 when it's more of an arena-type game.

I'll check out those fonts. I'm using Papyrus because it sort of reminded me of chalk. Which somehow relates to balloons and a stainless steel training facility.

Some of the highest rating games have short but sweet storylines such as Angry Birds and Paper Toss. I'm trying to do the same. A storyline that gives purpose but isn't in the way. (By the way the storyline also leads into what I have planned for Balloon Pop 2 & 3)

I might... don't own photoshop. Made the graphics on photoshop in school...

I have a Global Highscores list which shows the top 20 of the current training mode.

Gotta finish this in 2 days. My vacation starts in 3 days and ends in 3 weeks.
Here's my to do:
*Balloon popping and gun shooting sounds.
*Add Nuke graphics - Have a large circle atomic sign appear in middle then right after have the explosion graphics.
*Fix memory issues
*Possibly make credits screen loading so it doesn't blow up
*Multiple Bonuses at once

Incredibly horrible news. The name Balloon Pop is taken though there is no game called Balloon Pop on the App Store.

We need a new name even though I can't change the graphics. So:
Balloon Pop Free
Balloon Pop Training Facility
Balloon Pop Facilty
Balloon Pop 1
Balloon Pop: Training Facility
Balloon Pop Extreme
Balloon Pop 1.0
iBalloon Pop
BalloonPop
The Balloon Pop

Which do you guys like best, or perhaps you've got your own ideas for names?

Yeah. It will come soon.

I've changed the name to Balloon Pop Extreme. We have 3 people who chose it so... Guess it's time to finish up the submission. I'm not sure what's so extreme about Balloon Pop though...
Well, seizurific mode can be pretty extreme.

I think we should think up possible names. Someone originally took the name Balloon Pop so if their app comes out on the app store possible confusion could be made.
Once my app gets on the App Store I'd like you guys to give it a try on your iDevices. Then from what you've seen leave feedback to make it better and ideas for a new name.

It was an API to add a certain amount of time to a date. Single line of code that's used to create Matrix Mode and slow down time.

Ok:
It looks ugly. The font is bad, and the general layout doesn't look good.
The controls are finicky, I don't like them, the joystick is too close to the center of the screen, and the method of firing is very very annoying.
The instructions are not complete, if I did not know how you were supposed to play the game, I would be annoyed and probably exit and delete.
The high-scores screen should have a link to it on the main screen.
There is no apparent method of exiting the high-scores screen.

Absolutely awesome game Gan! :D I'm putting it on my main screen. The interface looks fine and the gameplay is brilliant, there's no need to change anything. Love the music too. I'm a bit wary of flashing lights so I'm sticking to Beginner mode, but it's really enjoyable. Congratulations on a terrific iPhone game!

Yup, but I moved to York last year.

The Irish have been ruled by openly criminal governments for decades, but the current party is so outrageously corrupt that popularity levels are at the lowest in recorded history. Whilst literally half the population are without full time employment and businesses are going bust everywhere, what are the government doing? Why, they're increasing taxes, cutting pensions and parading around in limos and helicopters of course! Not to mention giving themselves massive pay rises.

Our previous Prime Minister give himself a colossal €38,000 pay rise for absolutely no reason (and didn't inform the public) which brought his annual salary to €310,000. That's more than Bush was making as the U.S. President! When he was finally cornered in court after years of bribery and tax avoidance (which amassed to approximately €500,000 of personal gain) he got off by saying "Ah yeah, well I got a bit of a 'dig out'. Hehe!" Anyone else would have been jailed for life.

The current situation is awful. There's shootings every day and arsenal attacks on government buildings. A few bankers actually hung themselves out of fear.

It was private because it wasn't finished. Apple's still making certain APIs and when they aren't finished they can have their name changed at any moment. If an API's name is changed then it'll crash the program using the private API. There is a little reason behind the madness.

Wow. Sounds like an awful place to live.

So on to some good news!
Here's some stats:
- Balloon Pop Extreme went on the app store a little more than 24 hours ago. In that time...
* 307 new highscores have been submitted. Now it's 308. 311.
* 126 downloads of my app have been made.
* When searching Balloon Pop in the app store my app use to be #26, now it's #11.
* 20 ratings giving me a 2.5. Which is exactly average.
* 3 reviews saying how amazing the game is, 2 of them are my parents. ;)

Now to my plans.
Before I charge 99c I want my game to be worth it. When people play it I want them to definitely think that this is a 4 star game. That's when I'll charge for it.
My ideas to make this a 4 star game are:
Code: [Select]
(1) Move the joystick a little down and left for a better position. Also make it's movement radius maybe a little smaller.
(2) Add a Highscores button onto the main menu that can see all scores.
(3) Maybe change the main font.
(4) Revamp the graphics of the bonuses.
(5) Make the balloons look more round.
(6) Maybe add a Night training mode where the character is wearing goggles and balloons are neon green. Bullets are invisible but the player has a red laser pointer.
(7) On the highscore screens add 3 buttons at the bottom that the player can click to view any of the Beginner, Distracted, and Seizurific scores.
(8) When scrolling near the last player on the highscores list, make it load further players on the list above 20.
(9) Possibly also a highscore list for the total amount of balloons the player has popped in his/her lifetime.
(10) Slow down flashing lights in Distracted.

Here's one of my big ideas.
Code: [Select]
(11) Add player skill. At the moment you win the game off of luck and tapping ability. I want to add a player skill level so that with each balloon you pop you get some skill. Now with a higher level of skill your bullets hit your target more precisely, the faster your bullets go, the faster you can move, the higher chance of bonuses appearing, and the random color changing of the player's shirt as he gets higher in skill. This skill idea if added to the game could mean that anyone could get on the top 20 and it isn't so much relied on luck. Just persistence. If I were to add this in I'd make it a little discreet so it wouldn't get in the player's way though I might add a skill bar.

Balloon Pop is a training facility. Maybe the goal would be to make the skill bar get full. Then you're graduated from it.

What do you guys think of everything I posted?

Awesome! I was quite worried about that. Tends to run a bit jumpy sometimes on my iPhone 3G.

Anywho, I guess I should make the game more advanced. Taking a hint from Eq, I will probably up the graphics.

I like the idea of a bullet hole filled name though... I have no idea how I'd make that.
I'll definitely remake the balloon, bonuses and player.  I'll look into making a little popping animation for the balloon.

If you guys have any ideas that you think would further the gameplay, please post.
At the moment I'm still struggling with ideas of if I should add more bonuses, what kind, if I should add a gun store and have buttons at the bottom to switch your guns, and if I should add different types of balloons... or maybe even have a level/skill system or only a rank system.

-Gan
P.S. Just got this idea! What kind of training facility doesn't have an obstacle course?
Also wondering, would you guys like it if balloons bounced off the player?

Sure. :) Probably will throw a splash of blue or red. I'll also look into that bullet hole filled title and updating the arena.

I've created a little demo with the accelerometer and have had great success. This is definitely my most preferred way of movement, two thumbs for shooting and tilt to move.

Once you start charging, release frequent updates - that keeps it as a more recent program.

When I released SNET IRC on MacUpdate, I got 200 downloads the same day, but only like 10 downloads for each subsequent day. The front page placement really contributed to downloads. I plan on doing several small updates so I can get more front page time and maybe even get some users.

Just tried it out.
IMHO, I think there is a lot of room for improvement.
This isn't as good as Silverwind's GM games, for example.

- You should add animations !
(in-game and in the menus !)
The game, in its current un-animated state, seems way too rough,
and sometimes can be visually confusing (the balloons just suddenly disappear when popped)

- The game seems to lag a bit

- "Touch Bonuses to grab them" can be misleading  ::)

- Somewhat better controls would be good

- Less bare-bones graphics would be very nice
Title: Re: Balloon Pop ~ iPhone
Post by: Gan on July 16, 2010, 09:17:19 PM
Thanks for the comments. :) I agree with all of them. The next update makes it feel a bit more professional(it's still in the submission process) but I have plans to do a major recode. Add menu animations, balloon popping animations, maybe have balloons scale up to full-size when appearing.
I also am thinking of ways to do a speed increase so no lag.
Though that'll come after I finish my current project.

Hey guys, I'm well into work on 2.5. And it's lookin' good.

On a side note, yesterday was the first day iAds have been going! I'm proud to say that I achieved exactly $2.43 off of iAds.
If I'm lucky and it doesn't decrease at all I'll get around $300 by the end of the year. Of course I plan on making it tons better.

-Gan
P.S. I've noticed that iAds are crazy infrequent. Should I make it display a non-iAd ad when iAds aren't showing up?

21 * 100 games would be: $109,500 a year. That's quite a bit more than just a decent living.

Do you have a screenshot of how the iAds are displayed in the app? Are they really annoying - like popping up all over the game when you're playing it, or are they a little more subtle?

Here's an interesting idea - what if every 50th balloon was an ad? If you don't click the balloon - you miss out on those points. Probably too difficult to implement though - you'd have to sign up advertisers who want their logo on virtual balloons.

Don't use Papyrus.  It's tacky and doesn't fit with the theme of the game.  Plus, it is probably the second-most-overused font of all time (behind Comic Sans).  ;)

Also, I would suggest not putting ads in the gameplay at all.

I think I agree on the font part, though for ads... I gotta make money somehow. These ads are nice, non-obtrusive and when you click on them it doesn't throw you out of the app. Also, people love free games.

Hey guys... I've been thinking.

Soon enough I'll put up Balloon Pop Extreme 2.5. Has a huge amount of differences.
When I first put Balloon Pop on the app store what killed me was the large amounts of publicity. Publicity is great but when you put up a cruddy 1.0 version you get low star ratings. Which adversely affects you later.

So to fix this I plan to take down Balloon Pop Extreme and submit 3.0 as a new app with a different name that'll get tons of publicity when it first comes and will get many good ratings.
Though I need names. Any of you guys have any ideas?

WAIT. I think I figured it out. I'll probably leave Balloon Pop Extreme alone, maybe upgrade it a little but I'll release...
Balloon Pop Extreme 2
Featuring an in-game store for character upgrades and customization, many training modes and challenges, a ranking system, and more!
Whaddya think?

-Gan
P.S. Or I could change the current submitted version to Balloon Pop Extreme Lite and resubmit a new app under Balloon Pop Extreme.

I think it does use multitasking - it freezes the game, and then you see the ad "slide over" the game. It's "in the game" in the sense that you didn't have to load Safari. What other technical reason would there be not to support iAds on the OS 3? Some people, still using perfectly good iPhone 2G and iPod Touch 1G, will not be upgrading.

Balloon Pop 2.1 doesn't support multitasking. iAds don't use multitasking. To prove this go to the game, open an iAd and double click to bring up the multitasking bar. Look for Balloon Pop, if you see it than you're in a different application.

The reason OS3 doesn't support iAds is because it doesn't contain the iAd framework. Apple didn't build the framework for OS 3 because it'd take too much work. Having to support legacy software like the iPhone 2G and iPod Touch 1G.
