Title: 3D Modeling
Post by: Gan on March 31, 2011, 02:00:00 PM
Is awesome.
Anyone doing 3D now-a-days?

Blender has made a new update that completely revamps everything!
http://www.blender.org/download/get-256-beta/

The new Blender is so slick and it doesn't crash anymore. Also no flickering screen bugs. Much easier to use too.
In fact I'm toying with some of my own creations:

Yeah I know, it doesn't look very realistic. Yet.

2D art is hard enough.   ;D

Looks good though.

Pfft. 3D graphics. It's just a fad like the internet, next year it'll all be GONE

Yeah it will be!

Cause there'll be next gen 4D graphics!

What's the fourth dimension?

In my day we only had one dimension, and asking for more got you a smack on the wrist!

Cool sword. But as for blender, the new version is confusing. I can't use it at all. It looks a lot like unity.

2d graphics are more artistic and stylised in my opinion, i prefer the look of street fighter 3 over street fighter 4, sf3 is amazing in motion, but thats just my opinion. 3d has its advantages, you only have to make something once, then you can move or rotate it any way you want rather than redraw each frame. you should make a character next and animate him swinging a sword, ide be interested in how that turns out

can you add textures to the sword? that would add alot of potential. you could google a simple rust pattern and paste that on the blade

Yeah, you can do a whole buncha things to the sword.

Here's what I got so far:

I can't wait to learn how to add textures and fine details.
There's a sculpting part of the program that intrigues me, it'd allow fine detailing. Like if making a face, you could shape it like clay I suppose.

Oh, sculpting is easy in blender.
This is in the old blender, but I would guess it's not much different for the new one.

Any chance of putting a download link for your sword?

That is so cool!
I never knew it could such a thing!
This is awesome, I can make faces and stuff.
In fact I think I'll use sculpting on the handle of my sword to give it a realistic look.
Man this makes things exciting.

I'll show you guys what I've been working on in Digital Media (AKA Computer Animation) class. We're using Lightwave at school, it's really cool stuff. I've made all kinds of things. Robots, a sack person, trees, buildings, rain...

Yeah! I'd love to see 3D stuff you guys have made.

I've looked into LightWave and many say Blender and Lightwave work in similar ways. The only main difference is price.
Lightwave:
$100 just to get the manual on how to use it.
$900 to get the program so you can start using it.
$500 to upgrade if a new version ever comes out.

Blender:
$0 to learn how to use it. Tons of help online and everywhere.
$0 to get the program. Just need 22mb of space.
$0 to upgrade.

Sculpting is really easy:

This guy's got some rigged people up for download.

I'm using the game engine.
Here's a test for the game engine.

I forgot to zip so the download might be a little slow.
(press P to play by the way)

Wow, that's really cool stuff. The rigged people seems very useful.
That game engine is very intriguing. I've looked through your Chain.blend file, I see how the objects are made but I can't figure out where the code is.
What makes the stuff act the way it does?

Purple pac-man dude button is where the logic buttons are. I'm not actually using any code.

Thanks, this is amazing!

With the game logic, I can enable physics, run the game, have it record the physics, than render the animation off the recorded physics!

I love how you can even make a whole game in this without touching a line of code.

Here's a very fake looking wall being broken down by a ginormous golf ball:

Need to figure a way to glue bricks together to make it more realistic.

That's pretty cool. I never got good at any of this. How do you render an animation with physics?
Title: Re: 3D Modeling
Post by: Gan on April 03, 2011, 05:30:30 PM
In the game engine, hit record animation in the Game menu at the top. Then play the game, stop, switch to blender render mode, rewind to frame 0 and press Render anim.

Nice profile picture Matt.
EDIT if you want that building collapse to look better you can start by staggering the bricks so they "lock" together. It's stronger that way.

I'm hopeless with Blender, I couldn't make head nor tails of it, thus I am impressed with your creation(s)!
