Yes! Yes I have played it! I've had it for a long time.
It's one of the best free games I know.

And there is now a $10 version for the Wii with updated graphics/music and the option to play with the original of either, plus a new game mode... But I don't really see the point in getting it. Besides, the old music is better so I tried the demo with the new graphics and old music.

Cave story 3D, What's your opinion on that? I personally love the retro graphics (and the free-ness) of the original

I wouldn't buy Cave Story 3D, not if it's just the same game with even fancier graphics.

Yeah, considering that the regular Cave Story is free, I wouldn't buy it. But it has a fancy case

I thought about buying it to support the developer just because the original is amazing.

I didn't save Curly. You can tell a game is special if you can decide whether to kill off a character or not.

So I got round to checking this out a few days ago. It's an awesome game with gripping plot development, but I'm absolutely stuck on the hell cave level, on the way to fight Ballos. Anyone got any tips, or is it meant to be insanely impossible?

Oh man, I don't know a lot about that. It has been done, heck I think people have even tried speedrunning that level. Sadly while I've seen the other endings I haven't yet reached Ballos (in fact I think I already screwed up getting there in my current save). I really should try again, it has surprising amounts of replay value. I even have Cave Story+ on Steam.

If you can find a controller, I recommend playing CS+ with one. But anyway, I tried playing it on Hard mode (where you get no health upgrades) a while back, and I got to the end of the sand zone. It's a really hard game, though.

So I can just about get to Ballos every time now, but he's quite the difficult one all things considered, and having to replay the 8 minute gauntlet each time he beats me is very frustrating. Grrr... I'm just rambling to myself now, but grrr...

EDIT:

BEAT EM! Now I can lay the game down and never mention it again, save only to impress people over dinner by mentioning my victory ;D
