Old GameMaker Released as Freeware
« on: April 26, 2010, 07:55:13 AM »
Last week I released GameMaker v2.9.1 as freeware. It won't run on Intel Macs, but if you know anyone who has on older Mac and wants to have a little fun creating a game, then here it is:
http://alstaffieri.com/macsoftware/classic/gamemaker_291_freeware.sit

It will run on anything from a Mac Plus with System 6.05 up to OS 9.2.2 or any Mac with an OS X version that can run Classic applications.

How does Sheepshaver work? Would I need a rom image to install it?

Yeah. If you want I can give you a link to download my Sheep Shaver. Includes the rom, OS 9, and fully function windows and Mac Sheep Shaver applications. You may have to install a few libraries though that should be it.

Unzip, open the Sheep Shaver app. Go to prefs. Set the rom to Mac OS Rom, add a disk as the os 9.dsk, make the unix folder as the virtual HD(?) folder. Sorry, recalling this from memory.
If you do all this and it doesn't work you may need a few libraries which I'll look around for...

SheepShaver is kind of crashy for me. Basilisk II runs great though.

The difference is that SheepShaver emulates a PPC while Basilisk II emulates a 68K. This means when you run GameMaker on SheepShaver on an Intel Mac, it has to convert 68K to PPC to Intel which makes it slow. Basilisk II would go directly from 68K to Intel, and therefore be faster.

The maximum OS for Basilisk II is OS 8.1, but you can download System 7.5.3 legally for free, from Apple, for the true GM/System 7 experience.

Yeah, I've used Basilisk II though... Yeah, I needed OS 9.

Here's a video of me trying out Al's gamemaker in Sheep Shaver:

I have an actual OS 9 Mac set up to run old games and stuff. It's pretty tricked out:

1.7 GHz PowerPC G4
1 GB RAM
20 GB HD
SCSI Card. I want to change to a fast SCSI hard drive instead of the slower IDE drive.

It shares a flat panel, keyboard, and mouse with the PC that I got for free.

I have an actual OS 9 machine and a SheepShaver-based emulation system.

To run SheepShaver you need an OS 9 install disk or disk image with OS 9 installed on it (with the OS 9 system folder) and a "New World" Mac ROM (which you can copy from an OS 9 Mac).

A few places on the Internet offer SheepShaver + Mac OS 9 + Mac ROM packages (illegal to use, of course, except perhaps if you have copies of the original software/hardware).

Once you manage to get SheepShaver set up, it works pretty well  :P

I tried out Al's old GameMaker app on a System 6 emulator (might try it on the real machine) Pretty cool to see such great backward compatibility.

Hmm... I can't get it setup. I've done it all correctly as Gan demonstrated in his screencast and even went through this tutorial: http://www.emaculation.com/doku.php/sheepshaver_mac_os_x_setup

Whaddya reckon?

Looks like it's not finding the hard disk even though you've pointed it to it. So you'll probably need to take out your OS 9 cd and boot sheep shaver off that.

THANKYOU GabrielCA I spent hours looking for how to set it up. I should of started at the GMG all along. I simply downloaded the HD from the link you gave and it worked instantly.
I must be dreaming (wake up me wake up) How could this have happened. Tireas' cry when he found his computer fallen over in his chair with it's screen shattered.
