Risk of Rain update coming to Mac
« on: August 13, 2014, 01:08:36 PM »
The people over at Hopoo games are porting Risk of Rain, one of the greatest roguelikes of all time IMO to Game Maker: Studio (from Game Maker 8),  meaning they'll be able to make a Mac version, as well as optimizing it for modern machines. As a result, it should run incredibly well (it had frame rate issues before, even on high end PCs), and there will be all sorts of new content (2 new classes).

But the most important thing is that it's coming to Mac, and I totally recommend checking it out.

I finally got to try out Risk of Rain. I was immediately addicted. The music and sound overall are gorgeous, and the graphics are pretty unique in style. I like playing action roguelikes so this was a lot of fun. Then, as I played it, I realized that the more I learned about the game and the monsters, the more horribly frustrated I got... What kind of roguelike only gets more annoying after you learn more about it?? Oh wait, most of them do. Yeah that's pretty standard.

Don't get me wrong, I'll probably keep playing Risk of Rain for a while. There are just some obstacles in it that piss me off. Even when there are moves that allow you to dodge or block damage, there are attacks that seem unavoidable. If you're playing as Enforcer, jellyfish are your enemies. Imagine my distress at meeting a JELLYFISH BOSS.

Oh yeah and your knockback attacks, which are suppose to protect you, are worthless when there are too many enemies in the way... I don't know, maybe I need to learn more strategy.

Point is, this game is incredibly difficult, it may in fact be pure evil, and I love it. xD

The jellyfish boss doesn't hurt you on contact like the rest of the Jellyfish. The game gets easier with certain classes and artifacts. It also gets easier once you know all the items and get a hang of the strategy. Enforcer is one of the worst classes. I'd go with commando until you unlock more of them. Huntress is by far the easiest to use.

I don't know, I've done some cool stuff with Enforcer, but you're probably right, Commando is cool... I've heard of Huntress, too, and she sounds great. Apparently she can run away and still keep shooting backwards. That's all I ever really wanted do. :p

Why is the game called Risk of Rain, anyway? I still haven't figured that out. Or shoud I not ask because of spoilers?

I'm a fan of HAN-D, the huntress, and the mercenary, myself.
