Left Handed Experiment
« on: October 21, 2013, 01:19:39 AM »
I thought I'd finally go through with a little experiment I've been thinking about where I try to use my non-dominant hand for as many things as possible, starting with the computer mouse. I realized mine is symmetrical and so I switched the dominant button in preferences, so I can still click with my index finger with the mouse on my left... I plan to try writing and drawing left-handed more, and generally trying to consciously favor my left hand. So far it's strange but not so annoying that it's gonna be a big problem. Of course, there's things like typing that are not a big deal. Maybe I'll try Minecraft or TF2 soon.

Why do this? Because, I've heard there are benefits to using both halves of your brain, things become more connected, you think differently... I have this book, "drawing on the right side of the brain" (The right brain controls the left hand) and it has examples of this. Leonardo da Vinci wrote left-handed, but I think he used a mirror.

Maybe I'll get a mirror if I can fit it on the desk. I may or may not try to take in class notes or do left handed math. Probably not. Left handwriting is still to illegible for that.

Even though typing uses 2 hands I'm feeling a bit strange or awkward typing right now after using the left handed mouse setup. I don't THINK it's because of eating more sugar than usual this afternoon. Seriously it's weird. Part of it could be from sitting a little different, but I sit straight like this in class and I don't type funny.  I'm not kidding. My hands already feel funny. o_O

Be careful. Some articles say there are benefits, others say there are downsides.

I'm right handed but left eye-dominant and in the second article it rotates counter-clockwise for me. Which says I use the left side of my brain, logical.

Of course none of these have much proof behind them. Be careful, you might develop a stutter.

Edit: By staring at the foot of the woman, I was able to change her direction.

@Gan: FYI I haven't been able to really do this 24/7 especially if i have to write things down in class, like I said, I think I'll instead be keeping it to occasional exercises from now on. Everybody is somewhat ambidextrous and it can be trained to a degree. I'm gonna keep up the left-handed computer mouse for a while though.
I'm also gonna set up my snowboard for "switch" style so I can go down more comfortably facing either left or right. I had wanted to try it before, anyways. I'm pretty sure I've already learned to snowboard the opposite of the usual for a right-handed person, so, whatever.
