Minecraft in 3D
« on: June 28, 2013, 09:26:56 PM »
So I recently discovered some red/blue 3D glasses I had lying around, and I decided to test out Minecraft's 3D function. The weird thing about Minecraft's 3D is that you never hear anyone talk about it. I've wanted to try it since I bought the game, but I never had any of those 3D glasses. Now I have some, and I've tried it out.

So, I guess this is a review, of sorts, even though it's just a little bit of novelty and it isn't the feature that sells the game.

Lag 5/5
I had Minecraft running on my computer with max settings and an HD texturepack. Duplicating the picture for 3D doesn't have any frame rate drops at all.

Immersion 2/5
While this may have been my glasses, I could see the red and blue, making all the colors look funny. I realize that with the outdated 3D technology that this kind of thing is to be expected, but it takes you out of the game.

3D effect 4/5
I honestly thought it worked really well for something that appears to be added just for the heck of it. They never mention the feature on their site or anything, but I could totally see myself playing in 3D sometimes. It was definitely 3D. It had a better 3D effect than most 3DS games. It wasn't Star Trek: Into Darkness good, but it was still very good for what it is.

Overall, I suggest you check Minecraft's often overlooked 3D feature out. That is, if you find some good glasses. Mine were the paper kind that are way too small to fit on above your normal glasses, so I had to cut the pieces that go over your ears off and tape them on. Definitely don't play this if you want to avoid looking like an idiot. So, if you're a laptop user, I'd refrain from playing 3D Minecraft in public.

I have a friend with a 3D TV, and I'm considering taking my computer over there and playing some games in real 3D, because I have a 3D vision ready Nvidia video card, as well as a few 3D Vision compatible games. I'll tell you what it's like.

I used to have some anaglyph glasses, I used them for playing Nanosaur 2 while we still had the eMac. I don't know where the glasses are now. But that game was totally kickass and the 3D made it perfect. Since you're flying through fairly large environments and some of the enemies can be tricky it really helps to have that depth perception. And the colors do look a bit off, but mostly what that mean is your blues and reds get a bit washed out. This is one game where 3D not only looked cool but was extremely useful.
