that was really interesting, it makes me think of game design and how to break through

i think with games nowadays theres nothing that hasnt been done with features, besides im not good at inventing new features anyway. ive been focusing on story telling and writing lately, i think games need to have better, less generic stories. i think thats the best way to stand out sinse everythings already been done. sinse all rpgs are very similar and with horrible story ideas theyre all pretty much the same game, same with shootings games, theres so many and theyre even more identical sinse there isnt much gameplay depth for fps's. another thing is art design, give me something interesting to look at, cool looking characters, games either have the scruffy looking generic tough guy or some generic anime style, or something very symetrical, simple, and uninteresting.

an excellent example is gungrave overdose(PS2), great character designs, im a big fan of yasohiro nightows gunslinging style. i also liked xiii(ps2), i guess its an obscure game, i got it for like 5$ at toys r us a long time ago. it had comic inspired cell shaded graphics (which was new at the time) i really liked.

designers need to give the characters more personality and life for the player to-not relate to but connect with , they always kill off a character in the story(which is just cliche anyway) before the character has really defined themselves.

so i think to make a great game you could go with a successful gameplay formula like the original final fantasy and add unique character design, story events and character interaction

this kind of turned into a rant, but i liked that guys story

I think you're wrong in saying that there are no more possibilities for original game design... just look at how games have evolved. More powerful technology has given rise to genres such as the FPS and MMORPG, so imagine what new types of games could be possible in the future. I'm thinking of stuff like MMOFPSs, virtual reality, and even more innovative motion controlled games... and thats without even mentioning what future graphics might be capable of.

I'm not saying that you can't innovate on an old formula, just that the possibilities for new types of games will never be exhausted.

New Technology = New Possiblities. In that respect your wrong i think, but for now basically everything has been done.

i agree but i dont see anything new or innovative accept better graphics with the current gen systems accept for wii's controls but thats based on the hardware, that doesnt really invent new gameplay genres

also in the commercial industry i dont really like how one guy takes all this credit for designing a game that isnt all the inventive in the first place, plus, i dont see how anyone cant make a good game with the amount of resourses and man power these dev teams have nowadays. a good designer can make a good game with little resourses.

ive worked with people that just want more and more features to compensate for thier lack of creativity. they just dont know how to make a fun game with little resourses. im more about getting from a to b, then ill go back and add features, but you have to have a solid (meaning bug free) foundation to start from, i try to keep it simple at first so i have time to figure out how to make the game fun. ill admit though, im not good at innovating or makeing original gameplay features (cause its all been done), i just emulate Ā formulas that are already successful like final fantasy, so i tend to focus more on story and art

My point is that nobody knows what the future will bring, so nobody knows what new technologies will be developed and how they will influence games.

Equanox, I have no idea what your point is anymore :P

I Do, i know exactly what you mean Equanox.

There are still great games coming occasionally though, Fallout 3 for example.

The problem with todays game company is the HARDWARE. They have all opted for procedural processors which means pretty graphics but insanely hard to code innovative new features and make great AI.

im basically just ranting about the game industry of today

the new systems allow for better lighting, shading, and shadow effects which are good in left 4 dead to make it much more creepy when lurking in the dark, but still its just "better graphics", and it makes every game look the same.

how many fps's can you play before it gets boring, i got bored fps's when i played halo 2, it was the same game but with stupid cut scenes where the aliens talked with british accents ??? halo 3 is just gonna be the same game with better graphics, not enough to interest me.

i was really into the first gta back in 98, the second one was "ok", it had better graphics and lighting but the cars didnt go as fast. and the third one was great, i played that alot. vice city was good, i like 80s era. and san andreas really did everything, thats when i started to get bored with the series. gta 4 is just gonna be the same game with better graphics. and metal gear solid is the best game ever played because of the story and characters and diolouge, it was so perfect. then the second one was so lame, and the third, the story was so dumb. so i have no interest in mgs4 which is just another dumb story with better graphics
