My friend got a cheap windows. Does not game. And a few months of use, the plastic hinge on it broke. Whole thing is falling apart.
Plus the trackpad is crap, he uses a mouse.

I have a Macbook Pro 2008, got it for $600. Decently fast, I like the trackpad, no problems. Runs games and windows quite nice. Too nice if you ask me. Really eats up my productivity sometime.

Judging by how many macbooks are still around (not necessarily macbook pros) they seem  very durable. Microsoft isn't exactly known for making long lasting computers.

refurbished or slightly used macbooks aren't that expensive. Or you could build your own PC. Maybe linux? If you think you're up to it, homemade computers are cheap and fast, but can't run mac....

Buy a used MacBook.  I have a MacBook from 2009, and it's still awesome almost 3 years later.  It's really fast, and it hasn't given me any problems.  It's way better than the HP Pavilion that I had before, which died after only 2 years of use.  The hardware has "aged" extremely well, too: with an Intel 2.26 GHz C2D CPU and an nVidia 9400M GPU, I can still play many of the new games that are coming out.

That could be because Microsoft isn't known for making any computers.   ;D

Although I agree that the cheaper Asus/Toshiba/Whatevers are of pretty shoddy construction, a $1000 Windows laptop will give you a lot more bang for your buck than a $1000 Apple laptop.  With Apple, you are basically paying a premium for the cool factor.   8)

My replacement laptop has finally arrived! And it's only been 3 weeks or so. Such fantastic service... However, the damage was my own dang fault, the computer arrived in good condition and it was a steal at $500. So you might want to look at MegaMacs.com if you still want a computer Kurt.

Plus when they finally sent the replacement they put in everything from the old hard drive so I still have all my games and my drawings and of course my porn my Blender files! Maybe I'll do an animation starring that robot box guy I made.
