WFT apple, really
« on: April 16, 2011, 11:08:57 AM »
i could have sworn the mac mini used to be 600$, how did it go up to 700? the specs are the same, only 2 gigs of ram? but THEN..... the only monitor available is a 27inch lcd for $1000, it costs more than the computer! oh, and a keyboard and mouse is  another 100$, so a mac mini will actually cost you 1800$

apple should make a simple, affordable computer with basic specs for internet use, thats all i need. cause even with imacs at 1200$ the alternative windows computers are only like 300$

I think you can get an adapter for the mac mini ($20) that allows you to plug in any VGA monitor (which is pretty much all of them).  I agree in principle though, Macs aren't going to gain much ground among "casual" computer users (the ones that have no need for a tablet) as long as PC's cost $400 and Macs cost $1000.

Yeah, it's disappointing. It'll last forever though. I'd say get a MacBook Air, more powerful and you can go anywhere!

I'm still sweating the removal of the screen-orentation switch.

But the point of the mini is to hook it up to a bad moniter and hardware.

But that doesn't excuse why I can get a windows now for 200$, and the basic mac is 700$.

I agree with gan. In my experience, mac minis have always been slow. Maybe that's cause the two I've used were 6 years old. If all you need is internet use, I say get an iPad. Not much use for game-making, but it's pretty cool.

That's how Apple works. They sell you an underpowered computer made from relatively generic parts (one can purchase the apple-unbranded parts of an iMac for a quarter of the cost of an entry level iMac IIRC), put it in a branded box and sell it at a premium. If they actually made made everything an affordable high-performance product, they wouldn't make any money from the next product they release (because it's likely that the last product is still satisfying the customer performance wise). Similar to what IBM did in the 80's - only difference is that Apple is doing it right. $0.02 and such.

how do you get a Hackintosh? No one seems to own, or know how to make one, and even googling doesn't help either. One of my friends even thinks that it's a myth

OK. So they are spending $2500 to build a Mac that would have cost $3500. I bought an iMac for $1500 and all I had to do was order it online. I'll stick to buying iMacs.

I bought my iPod like that.
http://www.woot.com/ Has good deals on electronics. I don't know if they've ever had a mac though.

Hope I helped.
