Trash Talk / Cool Animated Fire Tutorial
« on: February 25, 2010, 07:04:09 AM »
I came across a nifty Photoshop tutorial for drawing and animating fire:

The first half shows you how to create a fireball and the second half (which is really awesome) shows you how to make a flickering flame. Just thought I'd share the find. :)

Trash Talk / Clients From Hell
« on: February 24, 2010, 09:45:12 AM »
Absolutely hilarious graphic design blog:

The last one made me fall of the chair!

Oh Lordy, I was almost physically sick laughing at some of those. My favourites:

That other website is stealing our business. Can you make it so that when someone types in their address they come to our site?

Can you take this photo of me and my baby and rotate the baby so you can see more of his face?

Above all, when you redesign the website, I don’t want any HTML in it. I’m tired of dealing with all the hassles of HTML.

Can you include a splash intro animation that turns the screen into a mirror so they can see themselves? We really want to push the metaphor.

Client: “Can you click the picture?”

Me: “No. What do you want it to do? Enlarge?”

Client: “No, I just want to click it.”

Me: “But when you click it, what do you want to happen?”

Client: “I just want to be able to click it.”

And the cake winner:

Me: “So what’s your budget?”

Client: “Well we are well known amongst all the Russian billionaires so there is great potential for you to get your name out there by doing this project for free. Also I am a direct descendant of Genghis Khan.”

Trash Talk / Ghostly Goings On...
« on: February 15, 2010, 05:17:54 PM »
It's been awhile since Yahoo featured any paranormal related articles, but they must be making up for it with the two featured today:

Ghastly Guest At Gwrych Castle

Prison Ghost Spooks Crooks

What do you think, eh? Just a graphic designer having fun with photos of his girlfriend? Something for the prisoners to pass the time? Or maybe... just maybe... something not so unimaginative. Like an elephant parade, but ten times creepier.

Trash Talk / Silmar
« on: January 28, 2010, 09:30:28 PM »
Just thought I'd post my yearly reminder that if you haven't played Silmar, you should do so now:

It's a bottomless well of inspiration for me. Particularly for entity characteristics (not that I've ever incorporated many, but I plan to in my next game).

Trash Talk / Majesty 2
« on: February 04, 2010, 11:28:32 AM »
Looks like Majesty 2 isn't far off the horizon. It's been in development for years but this article drops a hint it's coming later this year:

Has anyone else played the original?

Trash Talk / Old Graphics
« on: February 02, 2010, 09:18:51 AM »
I was rummaging around my HD trying to sort out which files had survived the crash, when I came across some very old artwork in the Roguesoft folder:

Some of the graphics were used in Epicus, others went on to become crude roughs for tiles, but some of them are lost to my memory entirely. I just thought it was kinda cool to dig up old stuff from way back when I first started game designing.

Has anyone else got buried treasure on their HD?

Trash Talk / New Sprites
« on: January 28, 2010, 05:16:52 PM »
As soon as the Roguesoft RPG Engine is finished I'm gonna start work on my next RPG, so I'm preparing a few sprites in advance. Here's a few I did today:

From the left it's Treant and Shambling Mound (which look like scenery until approached), Pixies, Snakes, Vampire and Lich. I'm quite pleased with the Lich and the Treant. :)

Trash Talk / Forum RPG?
« on: December 03, 2009, 06:10:09 PM »
It's been over a year since I've played Dungeons & Dragons now and I've really missed the roleplay, so I thought I'd throw together a short scenario for a forum game if anyone's interested. For those who've never played a D&D style RPG, you really should. D&D is the grandfather of all RPGs.

Anyways, I've been thinking up a quick scenario and will post the rules tomorrow so anyone who's interested can take part. It's not D&D, just a simplified forum game. :)

Trash Talk / Examples of game music
« on: November 24, 2009, 11:31:19 AM »
I'm composing a few melodies for my new RPG and I'm in search of inspiration, so I was just wondering if the composers among us could post a few samples of their work. I think Hampster's a composer, but I've never heard any of his stuff (as far as I recall).

I'll post a few of my own stuff tonight.

Trash Talk / Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days
« on: November 09, 2009, 05:42:05 AM »
Has anyone played the new Kingdom Hearts game? I don't have a DS so I haven't played it, but it looks really good and apparently it provides answers for some of the profound questions KH2 aroused.

Trash Talk / Happy Halloween!
« on: October 31, 2009, 04:21:21 PM »
Happy Hallow's Eve everyone! May ghosts haunt your attics, bogeymen prowl your basements and William Shatner raid your pantries.

As W.S. Gilbert once sang:
HEN the night wind howls
In the chimney cowls,
And the bat in the moonlight flies,
And the inky clouds,
Like funeral shrouds,
Sail over the midnight skies--
When the footpads quail
At the night-bird’s wail,
And black dogs bay at the moon,
Then is the spectre’s holiday--
Then is the ghost’s high noon!
Ha! Ha!
Then is the ghost’s high noon!
As the sob of the breeze
Sweeps over the trees
And the mists lie low on the fen,
From grey tomb-stones
Are gathered the bones
That once were women and men,
And away they go,
With a mop and a mow,
To the revel that ends too soon,
For cock crow limits our holiday--
The dead of the night’s high noon!
Ha! Ha!
The dead of the night’s high noon!
And then each ghost
With his ladye-toast
To their church yard beds take flight,
With a kiss, perhaps,
On her lantern chaps,
And a grisly grim, “good night!”
Till the welcome knell
Of the midnight bell
Rings forth its jolliest tune,
And ushers in our next high holiday--
The dead of the night’s high noon!
Ha! Ha!
The dead of the night’s high noon!

Trash Talk / Dost my eyes deceive me?
« on: October 23, 2009, 05:07:34 PM »
Is it true? Is it true? What the peasants are saying in the streets? What the captain of the guards reports? What the earl whispers to the duke? Hast that shadowy backstage Roguesoft developer long shroud in mystery finally joined the GMG? Yes, the name of Sora is among us! Huzzah!

Hehe, welcome to the forum Sora. :)

Trash Talk / Interesting Developer's Blog
« on: October 21, 2009, 05:47:16 PM »
I came across this guy's blog a few weeks back and meant to post a link to it, but I forgot. Here it is anyway:

He's a web app programmer who's made some pretty awesome JavaScript games in his spare time, and currently he's tinkering with the design of a grid based RPG adventure. I love his map engine, but I think I'd find it too slow compared to the "hands on" way. He used two arrays for grid mapping: one for collision classes and another for sprites.

Trash Talk / Amazing Web Building Tool
« on: October 16, 2009, 09:32:35 AM »
I just came across this today:

Apparently it generates web pages directly from Photoshop documents. That's absolutely incredible! I've downloaded the demo but I won't be able to check it out until tonight. Has anyone else heard of it?

Trash Talk / Web 2.0 Reflection Tutorial
« on: October 15, 2009, 10:05:02 AM »
After designing those iPhone icons earlier I feel in the mood for graphic sharing, so I thought I'd post a tutorial on something or other. Seeing as how Web 2.0 is all the rage these days I figured I'd do the reflection effect.

Here's the better way of doing it. Thanks Redd. :)
