Announcements / CHOUNCE is available for Android, iOS coming "soon"!
« on: July 08, 2020, 10:26:28 PM »

I released the game I've been developing on and off for the past year. It's a physics-driven, one-button platformer with deceptively simple movement. I coded it, made all the art and music, and had some friends playtest it.

There's a blog here on Tigsource with more details on development process:

Announcements / Slide Drop released on Android for ONE DOLLA
« on: January 01, 2018, 07:10:46 PM »

I released an app! It's not attracting much attention except for friends I shared it with right now, but it was a great learning experience. I ported one of my old projects to Unity, added one mechanic (munchers can be upside-down now) and some new levels. I chose this game to port since it had simple controls that feel nice on mobile.

If I did it again, I would aim for a free app with ads. Unless it's a much larger project, that is. We'll see what happens! I have a few ideas for what to make next, been prototyping some stuff.

Well, it's been long enough that I can't even remember if I posted this project here, so I thought I should probably just start a thread. I've been working on this physics game for, [checks calendar in disbelief]... over a year now, chipping away at the features I wanted in it when I'm not busy with my job. It's come a long way since that first Youtube video...

I'm still using the Love2D engine, and I'm learning some very interesting things about Lua in the process. It can save and load level geometry and objects, there are constraints, motors and even deadly laser beams. Because what's a game where you can stick to walls without deadly laser beams?? Right now I'm working on improving the graphics and I want to get a demo out there soon. I guess let me know if you're interested in playtesting it?

Here's the earliest footage of the game:

I've also posted snippets of video on Twitter:

Other Languages & Tools / UNITY

Soooo I haven't posted on this site in a while, but I though you guys would be interested to know that I've taken a class in the Unity game engine (and learned some more about Blender).

Also, some friends at the Albuquerque Game Developers Guild have started a very interesting project: they have designed an arcade cabinet! It will house a Windows computer with custom software which will be capable of launching a selection of games, and it will be loaded with games made by local developers. It's got joysticks and buttons for 2 players. The plan is to sell it to local businesses for the construction cost, and use it to hopefully get some people interested in the games we're working on.

They had a game-jam a couple of weeks ago and I made a 2 player pong-inspired game where you shoot at the ball with battleships. Unity is fun when you use it for what it was designed to do.

Other Languages & Tools / PICO-8
« on: July 27, 2015, 08:46:37 PM »
In case anyone was wondering (I know there are some lurkers 'round these parts) I have still been working with Love2D and Lua. I'd like to get LightMaze to the point that you can play it start to finish like a proper game. I have some other things in the works, though, as usual...

I was lucky enough to get Voxatron with a Humble Bundle and it turns out I now also have access to this lovely tiny indie game maker, PICO-8. Their front page describes it better than I ever could so check it out! The limitations do inspire people to make some very creative programs.

It runs on Lua and it's just a joy to work with if you feel like making something simple. It's a game-jam tool, for sure. It took me like 1 day to make a 2-player Tron clone so now I've got to try something bigger. :o

Oh yeah and this is like the coolest toy I've ever seen, the physics let you actually paint smooth-looking strokes:

HTML5/Javascript / Space Marine is broken??
« on: April 22, 2015, 12:33:14 PM »
I tried the HTML5GM Space Marine template and it is giving me that error where it has a problem with your code structure and it won't tell you where. The error happens shortly after the level loads. Does anyone have a copy saved of this version of Space Marine that will actually run? The pathfinding was really cool. :c

Because I haven't made a thread about it yet. I have an idea for a fairly simple game I want to make using some plugins I found on the Love2D forums, involving the physics engine and the Tiled map editor. More news when I feel like I have something worth sharing!

Trash Talk / Examples of Good Game Design

Games like Meat Boy should be able to teach you without having a wordy tutorial.
They gradually introduce new mechanics to pull in people's interest.
And they gradually introduce more ways that you can fail.
And in this case, people are going to go through a similar process regardless of age.
There are so many things I love about this video.

Code Exchange / [prototype] Physics Match-3 Game
« on: February 02, 2015, 01:13:00 PM »
Attached is a prototype of a physics game I invented while playing the built-in port of Box2D in the Love2D game engine. There are a couple versions: the older one, where you can push blocks around by adding new block but you don't know what color you're going to add, and the newer one, where you know what color you're going to place next but you can only add blocks to the bottom of the screen. I'm still experimenting with ideas so STAY TUNED. :I

TL;DR: 2 versions of my game prototype, click to place pretty colored blocks! Yay!

It's just incredible how many old computer games this reminded me of. :U

That blue guy is genuinely creeping me out, though.

I actually kinda want to make a movie with this after seeing Jerma's silly video:
