Title: Second GMG Game Making Contest
Post by: GMG Tim on April 24, 2008, 07:34:06 PM
I'm making plans for the 2nd GMG Game Making Contest. This time, the contest will be themed, and I'll take nominations for themes, and then there will be a poll for that theme on the front page. You can start posting your nominations here!

Themes will have to be worked into all entries. For example, if the theme is 'Pirates', all games will have to incorporate that theme into their game.

The contest will be a Summer contest, so it will most likely run from mid-June till mid-August. (June 15-August 15, perhaps?) That will give two months of time to write a game.

This time there will be a grand prize and a runner-up prize ($50 first place, $25 second place, both gift certificates to Amazon.com).

Let the nominations for themes begin!

I like the pirate idea...

I think the theme should be a suggestion rather than a requirement though.

One thing I noticed on the old archived GMG was that the 2001 contest had multiple categories, like Best Graphics, Best Gameplay, Best Story, etc...what do you think of doing something like this sometime?

I could do that, but I can't offer prizes for all categories, so I'd only be able to do something like Best Overall Game.

Definately arcade games. It would be cool to see how far people can stretch GM out of the box :)

I agree, GM themed contest, top three "Overall" winners get a prize. Contest has many categories, winner of most points in all categories gets the final award. Ever seen on IGN, where they do the year-in review? That's what I want to see, GM'nized.

A war game, that leaves a lot of possibilities.

I'd love to create an Arcade game. I already have many ideas for that, but war wouldn't be too hard either.

An arcader would be a pleasant break from all these time consuming RPGs. ;) I started a gambling based board game a few weeks back to get a change from RPGs. I'm still working on it, but the engines for the gambling minigames are harder to make than I thought they'd be.

How about arcaders and board games? If Al releases version 4.0 before summer, with more sprites, board games would be a definite possibility.

having a theme is kind of restrictive to creativity, an arcade game would be harder to make compared to a turn based game which might turn some people away

That's why Ghost suggested having two genres to choose from. Board games are turn based. :)

what if we had a contest for technical demos, like to see who can make the best inventory system or tactics engine, this way we wouldnt have to dedicate emense time to deveoping an entire game and it might produce some inovative concepts that we all can use

Ok but, The battle engine is unstable, errors have occurred where you computer thinks it is god and makes viruses for all the windows computers and tries to take over the world. But other than those things the inventory system works fine.

The saddest part is that my game's battle engine worked well before I upgraded my version of GM. I guess I was using glitches to make it work. Also I got too many games I am working on (1 to be exact) to start work on Darksville right now maybe when I am done with labyrinth.

P.S. Can a game be entered in the contest if it has two people developing it?

No you may not make your game in flash, because flash is too flexible-- we're trying to push the limits of GameMaker and SilverCreator.

You may work in teams, but only one entry per person (meaning that if you work in a team, both people may only submit that one game they are working on.)

Also, games must be started on the 25th, and finished on August 25th-- keep that in mind.

Also, welcome to the boards.
Title: Re: Second GMG Game Making Contest
Post by: HarryCaray on June 21, 2008, 06:41:30 PM
I don't know what it would fit into actually. The basics are that you are a hobo in the city. Dig through trash for food, cans, clothes, you name it. Keep these items in your handy dandy shopping cart. Sell empty cans to get money, pickpocket pedestrians, run from cops. Get into fights with city rats and battle other hobos for territory, then mark that territory by taking a long well deserved leak on the wall. I have several endings in mind as well...

Well I guess this could go under War/Action, there's fighting in it.

P.S. I've been on the SC boards since like 2005 or something. I've seen these boards many times just never posted.

I voted for Arcade.  Although attempting to make a board game in GM or SC would be interesting, it would be fairly difficult, especially for making an AI opponent.

To Harry: If you give the game a arcade-like look and feel to it, I think it would fit right in. Arcade games are a pretty broad theme, I have seen a whole bunch of different kind of games in a arcade. First person shooter, sidescrolling adventure, maze games, pac-man, racing, card games, and even a little game kind of like yipe.

Yes, you may. The point is you have to include a component of the theme chosen in your game, so even if the theme isn't online, you can still include online functionality in your arcade game. =)

My game's going quite well. It'll contain more music tracks than any of my other games, not including the SFX loops in QoM and MF. I'm composing a few of the tracks note by note, and one of the them in particular is really awesome. I still can't believe how versatile GarageBand is.

Here's my entry for the contest, made in Silver Creator:

http://www.savefile.com/files/1646052

It's a simple game where you shoot gnomes. I'm sure a lot of people have made games like this in the past, but I made one anyway. :)

There's one (minor) problem with it: after you finish the last level the game is supposed to quit, but I couldn't find any way to accomplish this. Maybe someone with more knowledge of Silver Creator can help?

Anyway, I hope you enjoy it. Do I get extra points for finishing early? ;)
Title: Re: Second GMG Game Making Contest
Post by: Gan on July 03, 2008, 04:53:56 PM
Here is the command for quit:

Code: [Select]
Quit

I know, it is very complicated, but with a little practice, you will be able to use it in any of the games you make.  ;)

Also, I played your gnome game. It seemed...  interesting. Though what did the smiling, happy-go-lucky gnomes ever do to you?

There's a whole 'nother month where you could stick in a storyline if you want to.
It would make the game more interesting.

Wow! The graphics in Gnome Slayer are beautiful! Did you draw them yourself? I find the levels quite long, and very hard, (like Pop a Penguin in Stay Tuned) but the graphics make it really professional. :) I got to level 3 before they swarmed me. I like the way you don't get bumped back to level 1 each time you lose as well.

Pretty nifty game Ledorax, and I'd love to see more added to it. :)

New version! :)

It now has four levels and two new gnome colours. And it quits when you win.

It's also slightly easier, though I think it might be a bit too easy now.

I've decided not to add a story, I don't think it would fit in. Besides, I'm not a very good writer.

Terrorists set off a bomb inside of Disney Land. The only Fairytale creatures to escape out of imagination land were the gnomes. Now that they are free, they are looking for blood. The United Nations has secretly contracted "John Everyman" to slay these creatures and prevent a gnome uprising.

My game's coming along very well, and I can get back to work on it now that I've nearly finished QoM. I'm spending allot of time on the music, composing each track note by note. It's hard, but allows much more versatile results than arranging loops.

They're often quite skilled at illusions and phantasms.

Ok I'm going to make a player shop, with every gun I can think of plus magic. This may get pretty hard to code  :o

I could add some powerups, perhaps. Like laser or flamethrower. Civilians? As opposed to..? The gun-toting badass gnome marines that are currently in the game? :P
how bout a reload. moveing targets, gnomes shoot back, you have a health bar, boss (i didnt beat it, is therea boss?), some gnomes should look disgruntled, maybe add gangster gnomes

Um, wasn't voting supposed to commence yesterday? Also, has there been any new submissions whilst I was away?

Ah, my mistake. :)

Next time we'll have to get 20 participants to make up for the lack of entries this time round.

Gnome defender got my vote.

Gnome Defender still has the never ending even after 2 weeks glitch. So it can't have my vote.
SC invaders was quickly deemed impossible as I had enough trouble with the first level and the seconds scared the hell out of me.
So it was down to super pong and gnome slayer.
I decided super pong because it was VERY DIFFICULT but not so difficult that I give up and start hating the game.
Gnome slayer was really fun and a few more levels would be nice.

i still think is funny how one game is about killing gnome, but one is about saving Gnomes  :D

I would have fixed that if my "testing time" was taken up by me packing for my California vaction, I wish that I would have caught it sooner, because it seems to be that main deciding factor...WILL I EVER WIN?!

Supa Pong got my vote. It was pretty good except for the bug that happens to just my computer. Don't hold down the spacebar too long.

I voted for Supa Pong.

I almost went with SC Invaders, but I couldn't pass the first level. I think it would have been better if the space ships (whatever they are) would have moved all the way across the window instead of only a little bit past half way. That made it too hard to know where they were going to drop down so you couldn't aim for the end ships. It also made the ships come down too fast since they only had to move part way across the screen. Some inor improvements and SC Invaders would be a really good Space Invaders Clone.

My vote was for Gnome Slayer. The graphics are very impressive, and it's an overall polished product. Supa Pong would be my next vote.

As much as I would love not shooting gnomes, Silverwind's supa pong just blew itself higher than the other games. (In my opinion.)

i had to vote for supa pong, its good! i cant think of any improvments on it. now gnome defender, good effort but not enough action for me, one enemy at a time is lame. i wouldve voted for gnome slayer it had good graphics but there so many flaws. you have to shoot way to many gnomes per level, you cant have me shoot 30+ gnomes per level when the gameplay is so bland, you iether have to interupt it more frequently before the player gets bored or add more action like weapons or grenades or something. you should start off with 5-10 gnomes and maybe add 3 more per level. also the screen scrolls so goddamn slow! at the end of each level i have to WAIT what feels like 10 minutes which is annoying. but the thing that really killed the gameplay for me was to much lag time, if i shoot and miss i also end up missing the second gnome cause of the load time for the gun i dont know what causes this (shoddy programming?) but i cant get past level 3. the gnomes appear so fast too, i cant get them in time, the most i hit was 19 on level 3. it would be nice to get a shotgun with wider firing radius, and then maybe an rpg. ide have to say it was just ok but supa pong was way better

Thanks for the compliments on Supa Pong guys, glad you like it! :) I'm thinking of adding a practice mode to the next update and possibly a stage 8 in arcade mode, only playable if you win every stage without losing a life. There'll be more hidden characters in the next update as well.
