Title: Third GMG Game Making Contest?
Post by: Swamp7hing on November 16, 2008, 10:02:27 AM
Any news to when this will be announced? School has finally calmed down a bit, so I've got time to actually complete Nel's Journey, and sumbit it.

The 3rd GMG Game Making Contest will be an all-engine contest held in January or February 2009. The time limit will be 2 months. I'm still deciding on a theme, and looking for sponsors.

Can you make it not have a theme? I find that contests are always more fun when you have more freedom in what you can make.

In silverlight or average vb.net coding?

Mono looks interesting, if you can get it working than I will probably try it out.

-Gandolf
P.S. I have lots of vb.net apps that could be converted over.

Quick question for ghost: would it be alright for me to make a game for a system other than a mac (GBA, dreamcast, ect.) if it is playable on a mac through an emulator?

Thats the problem with all engine contest, none of these can be be played stand-alone.

MONO is more frustrating then I originally thought...

Personally I think a theme is a good idea. Without direction nobody seems to complete anything.

yea i like themes, ihave to admit that i was against the arcade theme at first but it turned out fun

what theme though? how bout platformer

A *good* platformer game would be pretty hard to make in GM or SC... I know the contest is all engine but GM/ SC entries should be possible. If you really want to go with a theme make it less limiting... something like "any game but it must use a tile engine" or "any game but it must have physics" or something.

a tile engine game is a good idea but what kind of game could you make with that? its still limiting, you could probly adapt a tile engine for a platformer game. it would be interesting to see what people come up with

WOW Nel's Journey I was beginning to think it was completely abandoned with no chance of coming back. In fact I was beginning to think you deleted it WOW. I can't wait for you to finish it.

To clarify-- this will be an all-engine contest for MacOS X. Your game must be playable either as a stand-alone or in a web browser like Safari or Firefox, but it must work on OS X. Emulators will not be allowed-- the idea is to make games for MacOS X that are playable using commonly available resources on the Mac.

Oh well... I guess I could attempt to make a game in Scheme, or if that doesn't work just use SC.

Sorry, the 3rd GMG contest has been postponed for the time being due to the sheer amount of work I have ATM. I am still planning to hold the contest, but it may have to wait till the end of 2009.

I actually made a few dollars with the Roguesoft merchandise store, but it wasn't enough to cash out. :( Still, the thought that someone is wearing my logo on their t-shirt is reward enough! ;D
