Title: How is everyone?
Post by: Gan on October 02, 2015, 11:21:14 AM
This is a long term thread for discussing the lives of GMG members.

Where are you in life?

Has anything exciting happened to you?

What are your hopes and wishes?

Make any accomplishments?

What are you going to do next?

I'll go first.

Where are you in life?
I'm in college working on a computer science degree. I work for a research group at the college doing medical system UI and code. (It's not as exciting as it sounds)

Has anything exciting happened to you?
Not particularly. Went to the gym with a friend. Hanging out, going to events. Watched Dumb and Dumber last night with a couple of friends.

What are your hopes and wishes?
Make cool stuff and fall in love.

Make any accomplishments?
Recently finished my Fluffy Pug project (https://github.com/MatthewFrench/Project-Fluffy-Pug). It's an artificial intelligence that plays League of Legends. I use it to auto-level accounts from 1 to 30.

What are you going to do next?
Update my iOS apps. QoM, Balloon Pop, Teach Tools, iSpinner.

I just went through a ton of my old code files from 5+ years ago and added them to my Github repository. Now they shall forever exist. https://github.com/MatthewFrench?tab=repositories (https://github.com/MatthewFrench?tab=repositories)

Hello. It's me again...after several years of absence.

Where are you in life?
I'm trying to practice in both animation and programming with Python (from Udacity). I definitely need to start catching up in life.

Has anything exciting happened to you?
I went to my very first convention last month (Ponyville Ciderfest).  :D

What are your hopes and wishes?
I hope to become trained enough to bring anything to life. It'd be sweet if I could create a fuly interactive cartoon character.

Make any accomplishments?
I'm now addicted to Splatoon.

What are you going to do next?
Once the new year comes, I intend to implement a thorough daily schedule (and NOT procrastinate!).

Where are you in life?
Still in College, but looking for work...
Has anything exciting happened to you?
Right now I'm taking a college course called "Game and Simulation Programming in Unity" which is pretty much what it says on the tin: a class for students who want to learn Unity and/or make games. We're also covering some 3D modeling and animation. It's pretty much the #1 thing on my mind lately.
What are your hopes and wishes?
I want to get into a career where I can be well known as an artist, and make enough money to move out of my parents' house. Unfortunately, those two goal don't necessarily fit together haha :I
Make any accomplishments?
We made an FPS demo in Unity with mouse aiming and keyboard input. This will be my first ever truly 3D game.
What are you going to do next?
Depend how things go in this Unity class. I might wind up with something really good by the end of the semester, but in the meantime I'm still lookin' for a job.

I'm really enjoying making textures and I started an art blog. I'm doing a lot of small things to try out ideas!

almost 3 years ago a developer from the old gamemaker days stopped by the gmg looking for the resources to one of his games 'luke nukem 2d' (heres a link the topic)
http://gamemakersgarage.com/forum/index.php?topic=1540.0

at the time he was in the process of developing 'AntharioN', a role playing game which reminds me alot of silverwinds old rpgs, anyway i recently got it on steam and have been obsessed with it, i played through it almost 4 times( check my steam profile 'EqwanoX'), i love the graphics and the exploring but i keep getting stuck at the point when i get the staff of ascention! i dont know what to do! and i cant get in contact with anyone from the dev team.

anyway you all should check out antharion and help support one of the original GMer's from back in the day.  :D

It's always so cool to find out some Gmers went on to be real programmers.

I don't know if I would consider myself as a 'real programmer' yet.
I only know the basics.

I'm gonna put in another [shameless plug] for http://www.love2D.org as a good beginner's tool for the following reasons:

1. It's simple to install and run your first program. The following is the entirety of the Hello World program. It is run by pasting it into a text file called main.lua which is in a folder and you drag the folder onto love.exe

Code: [Select]
function love.draw()
love.graphics.print("Hello World!", 400, 300)
end

2. The engine has a lot of features but EVERY SINGLE FUNCTION AND OBJECT IS DOCUMENTED. They even provide code examples. This is huge to me because I have been frustrated with trying to work with some libraries or softwares *cough*blender*cough* because their documentation was either outdated, incomplete or just plain difficult to work with.

3. The community on the love2d.org/forums is really friendly and helpful.

4. It's adorable. Every version of the engine has an animated screen that pops up if you run the app without opening a project. The latest version has the codename "Baby Inspector" and the "no game loaded" screen is a G-man in a suit and sunglasses in front of a scrolling background of cute babies. This doesn't really have anything to do with why you should use this game engine, I just like it.

Yeah, it feels great to inwardly cheer them on :)

I've just checked out the video preview; it looks great! I'm particularly impressed by the clever diagonal sprite orientation, which gives the illusion that there's more movement and direction going on then there actually is. Shows what can be accomplished with single frame graphics. Gives one ideas too!

YO EQWANOX I FOLLOWED YOUR YOUTUBE!!
 ;D 8)
I've not used Silver Creator for years as I've gotten into other game engines. Been programming up a storm. Participated in a local game jam this weekend.
Here's our weird little 2-day project that I helped make:
https://rpcxdr.itch.io/dig-around-your-own-brain
I made the 2D portion and my friends made the 3D and helped hook both together. Search for coffee by wiring up your own brain.

Also, here's the game jam's page with everyone's game submissions:
https://itch.io/jam/nm-game-jam-2019/entries

I've also started a Discord server (it's what all the cool kids are doing these days). I'm close to releasing my second mobile game. Come hang out, we have custom emotes and a memes page.

I hang out on Connors's discord!
My wife also made a discord I hang out on: https://discord.gg/CQHj27
Discord name: MattF#9537

@Connors, that is a unique game. Good work!

@EqwanoX, I watched your car video. Cool car. Also watched the playing games with friends animation, that's really well done.

I've been learning the Rust programming language. It's blazing fast, faster than C and C++ in some cases. It is also memory safe and doesn't require manual memory management. Also compiles to all platforms and even compiles to webassembly. So the program can run in the browser on a webpage.
So I'm working on porting QoM to Rust. The plan is to run it on Mac/Windows/Linux and web browser. People are also working on iOS/Android Rust support. My ultimate goal with this project is to make a full game with minimal tooling/work and have it run everywhere with maximum performance. I'm using Tiled to make the world so I don't create custom tools for world creation.

Oooh, its it going to have continuous maps instead of the 7x7 screens?
It's awesome that you're still putting work into letting people play QoM.

This looks ace Gan :) I'll have to finally get around to signing up to Discord so we can catch-up sometime.

I haven’t decided. I may keep it true to the original QoM but Tiled makes it very easy to have continuous maps.

Thanks Mike!

Update: Pausing QoM Rust-browser re-write for now. Kinda got stuck on making the UI. UI in Rust is still young and time consuming to make.

Instead, I'm trying to make a quick and dirty hand drawn RPG in a no-build-tools vanilla JS environment. Kind of like my own personal game making dare.
I'm making the UI and windows first. My reasoning is, if I made the full UI, then I just have the fun part left- the game engine.
Here's a picture of my hobby work log: https://imgur.com/a/sKexm3J

Note: Looks like the GMG is no longer allowing post attachments due to a permissions issue.

Woah! Can't believe I remember my password. Randomly thought about the site today decided to chip in:

Where are you in life?
When I was active here, I was really thinking of perusing a career in Computer Science. I 180'd hard late in Highschool and decided to peruse wildlife conservation.  Strangely though, it all came full circle. Turns out every career needs some computer skills, and now I use R to do lots of statistics and data science. I was able to learn it pretty fast because of all my time figuring out code here, and it really helped my career in the long run.

Has anything exciting happened to you?
About to finish my Master's in Wildlife! Writing my thesis now on a population model looking at endangered turtles.
What are your hopes and wishes?
If I can land a job as a wildlife biologist, I'd be so happy. It's a very competitive field, but my computer skills distingish me from the pack, wish me luck!
Make any accomplishments?
Recently, I conducted the most through search for a species of endangered turtle in my state, and I'm working on publishing my results
What are you going to do next?
Survive the pandemic hopefully

Hope everyone is doing well! This board was so formative for me in middleschool/highschool.

I don't think we have met. Sound like a interesting degree. How do endangered turtles behave?
I dropped out of school after a few months of college. Due to money, social anxiety and mental health.

Howdy folks! Nice to see some of the old gang still knocking about :) Congrats on the career choice Gnome, it sounds like a wonderful use of your time and talents.

I’ve been involved in children’s playwork for a few years now, and they’ve been some of the most enjoyable years of my life. The job basically entails making children happy through creative activities, such as drawing, writing stories, making board games, composing music, performing dramas, and all sorts of other cool stuff. I feel kind of guilty getting paid to have fun, and I’ve looked forward to going to work every day for almost 5 years. I don’t even like taking holidays!

Today the kids played some of my old GameMaker games for the first time, and they really enjoyed them. They were excitedly designing their own game by the end of the session. We’re gonna crack open a new GM project tomorrow :)

Lovely to hear from you guys! Glad to hear people are keeping well.
