Title: Gnome's Exodus to Obj-C!
Post by: Gnome on November 20, 2010, 05:39:00 PM
People of GM! Do you want to say to companies that you are proficient in an industry level language?
Then join me in my quest for knowledge!

Main Goal: To Learn Obj-C to level you are at now with GM or SC.

Goal: Convert Silver's RPG engine into Obj-C

Side Goals:
 -Release App on App Store/Internet
-Add Networking to make an MMO (pretty much done, thanks to Gan)
 - Convert to Iphone Scripting.

How we will do it:
Every weekend, we shall host a time, then we will all join a chat and work on code together, NOT SEPARATELY. If you do it separately, it is your job to teach the team how you did it :)

People in project are expected:
To give at least 1 hour a week, (missing a few isn't an issue though)
to have the necessary programs to Chat with
A willing to learn.

:D

Wow this is gonna be way more difficult than it sounds isn't it?
I guess I'll keep watching this thing, see if I have enough time...

I take it you both want to join? Great!

There's room for a few more people.

I'm just getting my feet wet in Obj-C and will probably keep fooling around on my own for a while.  But this is a good idea.

I don't know for sure if I can join, since we're all in different time zones but then I can usually make time on weekends.

One person should host a screen sharing, and then everyone gets on iChat. You can all work on the same project with screen sharing although you'll have to coordinate as to who is working at what time (since you all would be able to move the mouse, type etc)

I'd be able to host if you guys wanted me to. I had no idea there could be multiple screen shares.

Objective-C is liminal and probably a little hard to pick up for an intermediate programmer. Its a good language but I suggest if you are planning to take a dive try out C first, and then go into OOP with either C++ or Objective-C. Also if you really want to make a career out of programming learn C++ before you learn Objective-C, as its more widely used and thus it would be more useful to know the paradigms and syntax. Also in my opinion its a better language but thats arbitrary. In addition there are more books and tutorials for C++ out there. Having said all this if you only want to program on a mac, or want to make your programs mac-centric (horay neoglism!) go with Objective-C.

First: welcome to the forums!

Second:  you seem to know your stuff so I'll ask your opinion here: since I already know OOP and have used those principles in a few other languages, do you think I would need to learn C or could I just skip to Obj-C?  I don't really have any desire to learn C but if it would help I would consider it.

Third: hope you enjoy your stay!
