Title: I just realized.
Post by: Swamp7hing on December 05, 2009, 10:46:24 AM
That if we actually do produce a short-but-sweet iPod Touch/iPhone game, and build up a solid base of 'fans', maybe release another one for free - it's possible that we could release a stable .99c app, and make some revenue off of the hobby.

Now if only all of us knew how to program like gan does, but we still have out own specialties. Once again, Gan, its incredible what you're doing here. Actually pushing us to develop a game.  :)

Which is why I think we should do our own DJ game like this:
http://armorgames.com/play/103/cooliodj

Music From DJ Swamp (i can't spell the actual name :P)

Making money is fun, but deciding how much of it each one of us would get is not.

Yeah I completely agree. That'd be pretty awesome, though I'd need to buy a developer license so I can test it on my iPhone and also stick it on the app store.

Yeah, I'm only the pie crust. Each one of you make up different parts of this pie that it would be nothing without you guys. I was thinking I'd like to make a tutorial or something to bring more of you to iPhone programming. It's actually really simple.

Sounds good. :) After this project is done we can bring the next project's suggestion list up. Stick it there, maybe it'll be picked.

I'd vote for splitting it even. All active members on the project would get an equal slice of the income.
Although at first thought I would actually like us to have a "Gmg Developer Funds" account that us as a team would put profit from our projects in and use that money to further our programming/development skills. Like if wanted, buy a group developing kit such as a team RealBasic software that we all can benefit from.

It would be cool if money goes to a GMG fund like you said, but it pays for the site and for contests. So we can have more of those.

GMG fund sounds good, like an account where we store earnings to make the site better?

Yeah, also maybe advertise and if wanted to pay a piece of what was made to the developers.

I see a lot of apps with video advertisements before they begin, maybe that could be done and Gandolf and Warhampster and whoever else worked on could get a percentage of the money from that.

Ah yes, it's possible we could do such things. If we wanted to go a step further, we could make great quality games for free but make our income from ads. Then have versions of the game without ads for 99 cents.

And make a company called GMG Apps

That'd be great.

gandalf should take lead of the project sinse hes doing most of the work already, keep whoever made the tiles to finish the art, fire everyone else(cause theyre not needed) and sell it as a dollar RPG

Or, set fire to everyone else. That'd create a sense of urgency.

Ahahahah(QOTM?), don't worry. I'll do neither. We shall figure out all this money business later when the game is finished. Until then, let us keep our sights focused on the real goal: to make an awesome rpg!

Honestly I think the only people who did work were Gandolf and WarHampster. I was absent for most of the project but from what I've read so far it seems that way.

Let us see...
Silver created the tiles, also provided a storyline.
WarHampster re-vamped the tiles.
Gnome created the main menu interface.
Other people provided ideas, support, ect...

Did I miss anyone and something else they may have done?

Here's a joke graph of what the project looks like.

Perfect, that chart shows the percentage of money that everyone gets.  ;D

The chart seems a bit inaccurate. I think Gandolf has done at least 50%.

Looks like it's how much pie everyone gets, and TD can have my slice. I don't like orange.

Hey TD, now that you have Silver's piece...  wanna trade? Pumpkin pie is my favorite, way so much better than cherry.

Any check Macnn and Macrumors recently?
According to them, apps on the App Store for the iPhone tend to have a 1 purchase per 3 pirated download rate. If we plan to sell this, it's going to need some very heavy protection. I think I've found some pretty good code to foil their plans though so that shouldn't be too big of a deal. Just in case...

Possible RPG App Plans:
- Free ~ Wouldn't need to worry of piracy, it'd actually be helpful by putting our app further out there.

- Only paid ~ Some worry, we could put a detector that gives it the ability to detect if it's a pirated copy and make the game unusable. Though if they want to play bad enough, it is crack-able with a ton of work.

- Free w/ Ads ~ Still good if they pirate it, means that we get more money from ads.

- Paid w/ Ads ~ Makes me feel like a cheat, but we'd still get paid with ads even if not paid when bought.

- Free w/ Ads & Paid w/ No Ads ~ Would be nice, means that we'd get paid from two sides, possibly more popularity. Piracy rate would lower though just in case I could make the paid version turn into an ad version when detecting piracy. People wouldn't bother trying to break the detection as they still get to play the game despite the ads.

- Free w/Ads & Paid w/ Ads ~ Now this is something... Like a donation I guess. Think the game looks great? Pay a dollar! Don't have a dollar? Get it free legally! Would not matter at all if people tried pirating. Though it'd be hilarious if people just roamed the paid section and didn't notice it was free as well.

Those are possible strategies of what to do with the finished product and how to handle piracy. Pick which you like best.

We can't be thinking about this until it's finished. Also, don't even bother trying to protect the app... almost everything on the app store that people actually want is up on installulos or the like.

True, true. Though once the app is finished and we decide on the plan, protection may be a must. A few lines of code is well worth 4 times more profit depending which we choose. Though for now I'll just let the plans rest.

How are these apps being pirated? One person buys it and then cracks it?
Title: Re: I just realized.
Post by: WarHampster on January 13, 2010, 04:48:21 PM
Yeah, what happens is that someone downloads the app and cracks it, and then uploads it to a site that links to a program that downloads and installs pirated apps to jail-broken iPhones.

Though the cracked apps can be distinguished by a signer identifier thing and also another method would be checking the ID of the phone against the IDs of the phone that bought it. The signer identifier protection can work just on the iPhone, the phone ID checking needs a server to check up with. Though the signer identifier protection is a bit more crackable.
