Title: It's Tutorial Summer

Hey GMGers, as you might have noticed, the GMG hasn't fulfilled its new member quota in quite a few months.

That's why I'm declaring this summer as Tutorial Summer.

Every week there will be new tutorials posted on the main GMG News page. I will be making an updated series on iPhone game creation. I might also do some Blender tutorials to mix it up.

I'd like it if you guys would contribute with all you've learned. The GMG could really use a wide range of tutorials. Music, making a nice storyline, a card based game in Al's GameMaker, how to use SilverCreator, doing neat stuff in the HTML5 GM, make your first webpage, how to do sound effects, ect.
You guys have skill, if you could make a tutorial to teach others this place could boom with activity.
After all, most of you found this place by googling how to make games.

Blender tutorial? Who ya gonna call? Josh Beck, apparently.
I too would like some HTML5 GM tutorials. You seem to be severely lackimg them.

That's what I meant by very new program! I would love to collaborate with Gan on one, he knows the program in and out and I can help make it more clear and concise.

I'd be happy to make a tutorial on how to make my artillery game / editor, if you think that would be helpful to people.  Can you recommend a screen capture program?

I certainly would love a tutorial on how to make the artillery game, all those crazy maths stuff goes way over my head. Plus I can see a boatload of uses for the dynamic terrain generation you've made.

I would suggest Apple's QuickTime for Mac. It has the ability to screen record at Medium or High quality and is able to show mouse clicks in the recording. It can also record audio with the video.
After you save the video, you can always re-open it and save for web, which compresses the size greatly.

For PC I'd suggest Cam Studios cause it is free and open source.

Tip of the wise, don't use Jing. It's excellent software but I'd advise using a program that allows you to keep the movie file. So you can upload to YouTube or I could host on this site. Also Jing has a video size limit of 5 min I believe.

I think I need to prepare for my tutorials. Start simple with a utility app. Then probably move on to canvas drawing. Maybe some OpenGL or CG Layers. I'll make sure to thoroughly go through and demonstrate the pros and cons of each.

I looked back at the GM5 built in tutorial and I realized someone who has studied one or two languages already could easily read through Gan's documentation and start using GM5 right away. Advanced programmers won't need a lot of help! That's why there are a couple specific tutorials I have in mind.
First, since it's simplified like GM and SC it would be good to have a tutorial aimed at people new to programming that won't assume they know much. A series of tutorials like Gan has in mind would be cool.
Second,  it bothers me that I can't see the compiler's feedback. I personally want a short explanation of how to look at the bug report in the browser's console. I got as far as opening Safari's console yet I'm unsure how to view the report.

Ill make a tutorial for decoding the debugger. And i might make the tutorials on HTML5GM, but connors made it seem like he wanted to make some, so ill make them if they arent already dogeared

Cool idea and all, but could you change "it's" to "its" in the first sentence of the news item?  It drives me crazy every time I visit the home page.   ;D

I'm sure "It's" is correct.

"It's" implies "It is".

"It's Tutorial Summer" would translate to "It is Tutorial Summer".

The apostrophe is for a contraction where two words are combined, in this case that takes precedence over the possessive apostrophe. It's means "it is", while its is possessive.

Also, Gan you can write the beginner HTML5GM tutorials, but I would like to volunteer to be the editor and offer critiques.
