Thanks, and it's really not that hard. In pseudo code:

        loop through every tile on the map and make it dark
        loop through every tile on the edge of the map and cast a ray to it, cutting the ray short when it hits a wall
        loop through every tile that was hit by a ray and light it
    }

TD - that's what I originally had, and people suggested that I expand it. Which look better IMO.

Gnome and others - I just tried fading the light based on distance and it did make things slow.

How do you make the rays stop when they hit walls? You didn't really explain.

The routine that makes the nodes visible loops until the ray encounters a wall or breaches the player's sight radius. Then it exits the loop.
