Post by: EqwanoX on July 26, 2010, 09:30:25 PM
when i put it to sleep mode sometimes it wont wake up, instead it shuts off when i press a key to wake it. then it wont turn back on unless i unplug it. this is so annoying! and possibly damageing in some way

I know how you feel. (Sort of) When I am surfing the web sometimes my screen just goes black. I move the mouse around press a few keyboard keys but nothing. The computer just turns off completely. You could see if a apple store could repair it, but it would probably cost you a lot. Mac repair isn't cheap.
P.S. I do believe these random shutdowns are the cause of my HDs demise.

Take the back off and look for any bulging capacitors on the motherboard. If you're lucky, there won't be any that are leaking - the motherboard is difficult to remove.

Then remove the power supply (which is easy), and use a flashlight to look at the capacitors in there. You probably have one or two that are leaking. A replacement power supply can be as low as $80.

Post your iMac's serial number and I'll see if you are eligible for the cheap $80 power supply from Apple. Otherwise you have to get it from eBay where it costs $120.

If no capacitors are bulging, then it may be another issue.

Is it a laptop? Maybe the laptop is overheating.

I don't think Apple ever made a laptop g5.

OK, you have an iMac G5 then? Sounds like a faulty power supply or bad capacitors on the motherboard. All you need to do is take the back off (very easy) and look. Power supply is only $80 if you qualify for the cheap one.

The power supply comes out using only the gold colored philips screws. You do not have to take out any silver screws.

Just shine a flashlight through the holes, that's usually good enough for me to check the capacitors. They should have flat tops not bulging ones.

Also check the motherboard.

You can pick up a multi-headed torx screwdriver from Lowes or Home Depot for pretty cheap. Apple uses a lot of torx screws in later generation Macs so you'll definitely get a lot of mileage out of it if you pick one up.

yup, the capacitor closest to the opening at the wire harness is just barley split open on the x on the top. i guess running it in the 100 degree summer days took its toll

wheres the serial number located?

You should only use computers in rooms with air conditioning in the summer. In the winter it doesn't matter unless we're talking sub-zero.

Look on the bottom of the foot for the serial. I'll run it and see if I can get you the cheap part.

As long as you can still turn it on, go to the Apple menu > About this Mac > then click under Mac OS X (where it says the version number) until your serial number comes up. You can also click More Info and in that window, with Hardware highlighted (the first option at the top left), you can see the serial number in that list.
