Title: Mod Power
Post by: Gnome on January 16, 2010, 09:55:44 AM
I think the current mods should be able to do mod stuff in announcements and other sections so we can take over this forum Prevent spam in all threads while ghost is at school.

Its like he's a government official. They claim they want more power to help you when in reality they want to control every aspect of your life. I vote no. (That would be of course if this was a poll)

I think it would be cool if Mods had the ability to post polls. This would help a lot with the non-active QOTM forums. After a couple of quotes are nominated a poll is posted and people vote for their favorite!

YaBB can post polls but I think they're disabled.

Well then I suggest enabling polls!

And as for mod powers, I think sticking and deleting and modifying are enough.

The ability to lock things would be nice.

Isn't Telstar a mod of Announcements? Clean this stuff up!

Agreed!

What's all the hype with mods deleting posts these days? I understand the need to clean up spam (as in multiple posts and bot advertisements), but surely deleting records of what people say is a bad idea.

You can't erase history, only falsely remember it.

In some cases you need to lock the things because really the Request flame war is really out of hand.

Agreed. Not delete, lock.

spam isnt an issue, and peoples posts shouldnt be deleted, so i dont see a reason to give more power to mods

if this is about deleteing the flame war, if you dont like flame wars dont click on that topic

Lock/move to 'Dead Threads' (Should make one of those).

This is an older YaBB that does not have poll support.

Lock/move to 'Dead Threads' (Should make one of those).
"Dead Thread" sections create unnecessary work for the mods, in my opinion.  It actually makes things less organized because people looking for specific old threads would have to sift through a bunch of unsorted ones rather than the ones in a specific area (e.g. GameMaker Help).   If a mod truly thinks that a thread is over and that there should be no posts made in it, it can be locked, but most threads on this forum are never really dead because something can always be added to the discussion.  That "request" thread which turned into a flamewar was an outlier on this forum in that it actually deserved a lock; the GMG seems to be civil most of the time.  I don't think there's a need to put more restrictions/rules in place.

I also don't agree with posts being deleted unless they are clearly spam.

Another weird aspect of this board is that most of the active members over time came to be mods of specific forums, when there is so little activity here and so few members that just one global mod would easily be able to handle everything that goes on (which isn't much; as I said before, people on this forum seem to be well-behaved).  This over-moderation is a trend of less active boards where the few active members express an urge to help even more with the community, and the admin (who doesn't want to lose the few active members he has) agrees.  Not saying that is necessarily what happened on the GMG, but the over-moderation issue should be considered.

It's also worth noting that the old GMG also had the same moderation style, with several of the more active members having the "GMG" title affixed to the beginning of their names despite the fact that they didn't actually do much for the GMG.

I suppose locking the topic would work, although it seems silly having to lock a topic when people could easily solve the problem themselves by not posting. Hammy and Xi were actively involved in the debate, and yet now they want mods to silence it! ::)

I don't think Ghost granted moderation duties as a reward, so whether or not mods actively contribute to the game or resource pools is quite irrelevant. Ghost merely wanted a few extra hands to keep the forum clean in his absence.

btw Charlo, it's nice to see you back! :) What've you been up to?

What can I say? Debates are fun!

Or Eq said it best with flame wars are fun!

My main computer (a windows 7 PC) conked out when it was only a month old, so while it's repaired I'm stuck on this MacBook.  :P

Work on GameMaker projects has been slow but is moving faster now.  I will probably actually buy GM in the near future, since that fifteen-line scripting limit makes coding a challenge in efficiency and conciseness.

I love how people buy GM even though SC is free and technically more powerful  :D

I understand that, but I have projects going in GM plus I've never really gotten used to SC.   ;D
