Go for the iMac if it's in a good condition; repairing the logic board and changing processors can cost as much as buying a new computer.

That and there's a chance the cpu won't be compatible with your current logic board. >_<

Bad motherboards in eMacs and iMac G5s are typically bad capacitors. Apple had completely free 3 year replacement programs for all of these, and sometimes Apple will still repair these for free if they are under 5 years old (7 years in California due to state law).

Bad motherboards in Intel Macs is some kind of other issue.

im gonna get a 1.6ghz g5 17" imac for $300. its running 10.3 so it must be 4 years old, if the board hasnt gone by now i should be pretty safe?

i hate apple.com, i just want to know how much an osx update is, all i can find is snow leapard which only works on intel's, is 10.5 compatable with g5 and how much is it? i couldnt find it on apple.com

one more question, one problem i have with buying used computers is somepeople dont remember the password, can i reinstall osx without the password? this guy said he would burn 10.5 and give it to me with a 1.4ghz g4 emac for 90$

Get an intel. It may cost a little more but it'll be worth it.

That's a good deal for an eMac like that, but the performance will be worse if you already have a Dual G4 1 GHz, which I think you said you had.

It's a pirated 10.5 so you're not really getting 10.5. On the other hand, Apple no longer sells Leopard anymore. There are only a finite number of copies in the wild now. Prices will remain high.

The 1.42 GHz eMac will improve performance about 50-60%% over your 1 GHz eMac. In another thread you said it uses PC133 memory so it is the older style eMac with a 133 MHz bus. The 1.42 GHz eMac will have a 167 MHz bus, much better graphics which are Core Image compatible (Radeon 9600 64 MB vs Radeon 7500 32 MB), probably a faster hard drive (bigger hard drives are faster at the same RPM simply because the data is closer together), twice the L2 Cache (512KB vs 256KB) and it will use cheaper DDR RAM which you can upgrade to 2 GB.

It's not a bad upgrade, and after you sell your old eMac you would only be out $20-$30 at the most.

To upgrade to Intel would require at the minimum a $300 outlay and that would get you one of the early Mac minis. Avoid the Mac mini Core Solo, it is terrible. Even if you get a Core Duo, your graphics would be a downgrade compared to the eMac 1.42 GHz, because the early Mac minis use shîtty GMA 950 graphics chips. There's also no guarantee you will get to upgrade past Snow Leopard, knowing Apple they will randomly cut support for the earliest Intel Macs just to piss people off.

yea your right about the specs on the new emac, i got it and i was shocked when i ran the system profiler, it has 64megs of video ram, 1gig ram, 150gig hard drive, a superdrive(dvd burner), and its running 10.5, not bad for 90$

can i make a backup of 10.5 from the emac to put on the G5? do i use time machine or something? i havent had a chance to mess with it

You can do a clone hard drive which is very fast. I have to install Tiger on these hundreds of eMacs for Adopt a Mac, so I installed it once on a hard drive, and then I just go to each eMac, boot off the hard drive, and then clone the hard drive, and it takes about 10 minutes where a normal Tiger install takes 45 minutes plus all the time wasted doing updates.

Just boot the eMac in FireWire Target Disk Mode (hold T button on the keyboard when booting), then hook the eMac to the G5 with a FireWire cable and then set the G5 to boot off the eMac's hard drive. After it boots you load Disk Utility. Click on the G5's hard drive, then go to the "Backup" tab.

For the Source you drag the eMac's hard drive to the field. For the Destination you drag the G5's hard drive to the field. Check the "Erase Destination" box. Do not check the "Skip Checksum" box. Click the Restore button.

It will copy very fast. The G5 will be erased, but the next time you boot it will be a clone of the eMac.

Buy a Powermac and install BeOS on it. There you go, you've upgraded and probably only paid twenty bucks for it!

im a little disapointed in the g5, the cooling fan is loud and whiney, and it only has 64megs video ram, same as the g4
