Title: My game development class
Post by: WarHampster on August 11, 2011, 06:26:03 PM
I mentioned earlier this summer that I was teaching a game development class for elementary school kids. Well, the class ended a few weeks ago, and I've put together a site where you can download the kids' games! Overall the class went very well - all the students finished their first project (an adventure game). I had to leave a week before the end of the program and the other teacher kind of blew it... none of the kids finished their second project, a maze game. Still, it was fun and I think everyone learned a lot.

The website: http://www.arcadeoftheabsurd.com/waterside

I recommend playing: Prince and Princess (the most complex and fully realized), 7ft 11 Inches (surreal), and Ninja Fights (coherent graphics).

I'm going to be writing an essay about my experience in general and my observations of how elementary school kids play and conceive of games for my blog and Nightmare Mode.

Holy cow! :o You showed 3rd graders how to make games? What software did they use?

Wow. That makes me feel stupid. I can't even use SC but 3rd graders can. It doesn't let me download them, but I can only assume that they're awesome, long, and have 1000s of lines of code in them.

As an avid NBA fan, I played "Kobe The Destroyer".  Good storyline, but I think they took too many cues from the movie "Space Jam".  And it was inaccurate as well; they said in the game that Kobe was shooting three pointers and making them, but in real life, Bryant makes less than a third of his three point attempts.  Still, it was the best indie game I've played since Machinarium.

Haha, the adventure games don't even use code. I started them programming games where you run through a maze collecting stuff, but they never finished.

@zoo - the downloads don't work in firefox?

I think my firefox is broken. The only reason I use it is because I want to stay logged in on things, and so does my brother. I can't download anything on it. Very talented kids BTW, those are the kind of games I was making just a year ago (But with some code, of course)
I actually had a few "Adventure" games that I made, but they were all awful.
