Ok, we can start brainstorming ideas now. I suggest a free roaming gameplay, rather than a game you "win" by completing a story quest or something. That way we could keep adding to it. Also, I think we should expand on the game's world as we see fit, rather than plan the entire thing in advance.
-
I could do music but I'm really not talented enough to do anything else. ;D
-
Hmm, this will be good to tide us over until GM4 comes out for LW. I'll be in on this, I could be a creative consultant, graphic artist, music, whatever.
One thing I want to do though - use the grid system without the black lines crossing it, and make it hopefully set in the time of pirates, or in space.
EDIT: If its Pirate based, we could call it "The Search for Deadmans Cove", and if it's based in space, we could call it "Beyond The Limit" (I know this title is from one of my games in progress, but the progress has been, shall we say, slowed, and we could use it in this one. A bonus would be that I already have TONS of ideas if we use the space theme)
-
Cool, the list is growing fast! :D I like the idea of pirates. Perhaps an archipelago setting.
EDIT:
Anyone have any ideas on which tileset to use?
-
Argh Matey, check out my edit above.
EDIT: I say we make new tiles, I really want to make an RPG without the back lines.
-
I agree, the border lines must go. I'm more up for a pirate theme then a space theme, but perhaps we could still include monsters as well as pirates as enemies.
-
How about half a dozen small to medium sized islands, some of which are at war with each other? Others could even contain only monster inhabitants. I like the way Oberin has an island inhabited by Lizard Men.
-
I may try to help in this one.
I like the idea of it being free roaming.
If I write tileset generation code, I could make it update without having to download a new client.

Sounds good

Sounds good Mist. I'll add you to the list.

Im willing to do gruntwork!
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
A free roaming game Eh? sounds interesting... I wonder how we can do it. I guess we could make an "event" system. And we could implement internet code that can change cards according to the new event. winners of the may get a special weapon or item.
An event could be a battle or we could add a special sub-plot "An evil god trying to destroy the world".
-
We need to decide on a tile set early on so that mappers can get to work. I'm more interested in building the engine, but I'll assist with mapping if we're shorthanded.
I love Swamp's suggestion of making our own tile set, but so far I'm the only one who's made more than 3. (wow, I just counted. I've got 143 scenery tiles, (though allot of that is due to stone paths on various backgrounds and sand/grass conversions) 122 entity tiles, (24 of which are Drow) and 9 item tiles! :D ) So who's up for drawing tiles?
-
Before we even THINK about drawing tiles, what are we going to do about the black lines? Oh, an if it's a pirate game, I think you should be able to buy and upgrade different ships to sail from island to island, and dock at ports on each isle. There should be epic sea battles as well.
-
lol! What do you mean "what are we going to do about the black lines?" We just won't draw our sprites with black lines around them. ;D
Should we try 32 by 32 pixels this time?
-
definately 32x32 px

I pirate game oh....MAJOR RANDOM IDEA TIME
You get to hire your own crew with they own skills.
e.g.
Bob Mcdude:
Skills: Surgury: 9 (out of ten)
Job: surgeon
Weapon: Scaple
etc.
you go around the islands making enemies and friends.
e.g.
Reputation
England: +10
spain: -4
the more they like you the more likely they will give you jobs (for a reward) when you encounter them. if they don't like you then when they encounter you will get in a fight. in a fight you have 3 options board, fire, and run away. if you board then you can take your opponent's ship when you win. You start of with a basic sloop, but certaint cities will offer better crew and some add-ons to your ship. you can also try to bombard and take over cities as well.
ow my brain hurts now.

This looks interesting. Would it look something like this: ...Adddress gone... ?
So, would it be scrolling maps? Or maybe even online?
-Gandolf
-
Anythings possible! I'm just not entirely sure HOW. :D

How about a morowindesque (has anyone played that game morrowind?) extremely free roaming game. Where you can chose who and what you are, and how you go about the main quest along with multitudes of small quests. I was thinking heaps of exploration and character development type game. And classic stat heavy, item hunting fun.
I also have an idea for a story.
Setting: The Quartet. There are 4 cities at each corner of the world along with multitudes of towns.
Main quest: Every baby born into this world is assigned a god to watch over them, who they pray to at birth depending on their birth date. Those who dont have gods watching over them are "godless" and are cast out or killed. Pandora (working name) is one such person. She was born to uncertain parents and was found washed up on shore (other ideas?). Having no god she was cast out into the winderness in the center of the quartet. There she grew up, shunned by humanity, godless and alienated. With no kin, no home, no identity. So she makes an identity for herself. She vows upon her own “Never more shall I be cast away, the world will pay”. She then hones her inert powers (magical, channeling) and topples the emporers of the world and systematicly breaks the work apart. And out of the ashes and rubble and memories rises Fey. The greatest hero of all.
You play as Fey in this fantasy, post apocolyptic world.
Thoughts? Its a bit rough around the edges as its all off the top of my head, allthough i think its a good idea.
-
Also i vote that this should be a MSORPG (massivly single player offline rpg) not online, as lost winds is allready doing that.
-
Yes. I have an Idea...
Just give e a bit of time to implement it...
Mist
-
What's the idea?
-
It is on how the tile generation system could work...

(PS I like your sig)

I think it might be a good idea to make another forum for this project so that this board doesnt get cluttered. Ill go register 1
-
...or I'll just make a board under the GameMaker/SilverCreator section.
- Ghost
EDIT: Stickied.

Wow, thanks Ghost! :)

This looks interesting. Would it look something like this: http://web.mac.com/avisaria/Athora.zip ?

-Gandolf
Very interesting concept Gan. Nice work. Yeah, I think it should have scrolling maps.
-
Thanks ;) Scrolling maps would be wonderful. Though, I hope it doesn't make it any slower.
-Gandolf
-
Just tried it and its quite slow. Also the movement doesnt work great... if u hold down any arrow it keeps scrolling... Im interested to know how collision detection works? Sprites?
By The Way, is everyone aware that this is silver creator and not GM?
Ill try to remake it in GM tonight
-
Well, SilverCreator would be able to handle more sprites, so in that respect it'd be faster.
I think the problem is that you're loading the entire map at once, and moving it around based on the player's movement. Try loading sections of it, and stitch it together as the player moves around.

I was thinking about a cell system along the lines of that. This IS a GM group project as the name of the thread implies
-
Oh, Thanks. And here is the SC File so if you want to convert it, it will be a bit easier... ...Address Gone...
-Gandolf
-
Thanks Gandolf. It looks like a great engine idea, ill convert it tonight, and upload it to my GMG site. Then we should start working on story ideas. Ill creat a new thread for that.
-
Im going away for a few days and hopfully will be coming back with a cool scrolling engine based on Galdolfs (thanks). Looking forward to seeing some story and game ideas when i get back :)
